I have a 1974 Glastron V184. It is a 302 Ford powered 4bbl carbureted engine on a Volvo Stern drive. The unit has 350 hours on it. I have owned it since new and until 10 years ago used in yearly when we lived on a lake. It has been in storage for the last 10 years and now I am restoring it. It has always been well taken care of and always stored inside. I fogged the engine each year and before I put it in storage. I put a can of gas store agent in the can but the gas smells foul.

The steps I have taken:

A. I want to make sure the tank is in good shape. I have ordered some gas restorer to pour in the tank before I drain it. I then plan to put in fresh gas.

B. I am rebuilding the raw water pump. it is a Jabsco Internal pump.

C. I may rebuild the circulation pump depending on how it sounds.

D. I am not sure what to do with the carburetor, whether to rebuild it, etc. It is a Holley 450 CFM 4bbl.

E. I plan to drain and refill the oil in the engine and the outdrive.

F. I thought that I might shoot some Kroil or Gibbs or other into each cylinder before I start it.

G. I may replace the boot on the outdrive.

I would appreciate it if more knowledgeable readers would review my plan. I want to make sure the engine and everything else is reliable.

Thanks,

Forget saving the fuel that is now in the tank, drain every last drop you can & put in fresh gas.....

It will most likely need to be disassembled, cleaned, new gaskets....

E. I plan to drain and refill the oil in the engine and the outdrive.

F. I thought that I might shoot some Kroil or Gibbs or other into each cylinder before I start it.
Won't hurt, & spin the engine manually while the plugs are out....

G. I may replace the boot on the outdrive.

10 year old rubber should be replaced....

I would appreciate it if more knowledgeable readers would review my plan. I want to make sure the engine and everything else is reliable.

I would pull the distributor and run the oil pump with a drill so you build oil pressure and oil all the bearings before turning the engine over at all.

The ujoint bellows is a MUST CHANGE, item after 10 or more years.

Carb will need rebuilt. What was left in the carb is probably no longer recognizable as gasoline, and probably has all the passages plugged up with varnish.

Re: Restoring a 1974 Glastron

Some notes.

I was planning on cleaning up the gas before I drained it and disposed of it so it would not contaminate the lines, etc. I thought that the cleaner would get some of the varnish out of the tank.

Sounds like the bellows replacement is a must and I will do.

Do you have to make a special tool to spin the oil pump?

Rebuilding the carb sounds like a good idea.

I plan to replace the old points ignition with breakerless.

Any additional tips appreciated.

Thanks,

Jim

Here is a kit for Ford and Chevy engines, but you might check your local auto parts store for the one you need.

You just pull the distributor and the tool fits into the distributor hole and turns the pump. The Distributor is what normally drives the pump

Screwdrivers for Chevy, hex for Fords (either 1/4 or 5/16")

Ayuh,.....

That's all Fine & Dandy,...........Except,.......
Without the Distributor's Body in it's hole,.......

Only the Bottom End of the motor sees any Oil,....... Mains,+ rods.....

The Distributor's Body closes off the Cam's Oil Galley.......;)

I'd just crank it over on the Starter, with the Sparkplugs out,.......
And,.....
Then put it back together,+ Light it.......
Just to see what you have to work with........

Re: Restoring a 1974 Glastron

Is there any suggestion of something other than Kroil to shoot into the cylinders when cranking it over without spark plugs?

Also, I plan to replace the bellows and notice that there are a lot of aftermarket parts. How do these stack up with oem?

the dist body does not block off any holes i have been priming ford engines this way for years. don s is right its either a 1/4 or 5/16 i believe 1/4 on a 302 what i did was took an old oil pump shaft and put in the right socket put a spot weld on it and made my own primer. yep i just checked its 1/4 inch sockett to bad you wasnt close by id hook you up with one already made.
