Re: Engine comparison ?

Not sure what Merc is doing this year but when my engine (90 hp 3 cyl) was built in '02 the 115 was a 4 inline and they used a 2 cylinder shut down function at low speeds. Never heard a good word about that enigne.

The Yammie is (was) based upon the old v4 OMC patent even though it is looped charged (great). Very smooth and very reliable with millions built.

If repowering today, unless something has changed with them, it would be with the yammie v4.

The Yamster. More reliable...If you are comparing 4-stroke to 4-stroke.

Based on what? The comparison you are mentioning is the L4NA Verado-based Merc versus the F115. I have read no first-hand test accounts comparing these engines head-to-head

Re: Engine comparison ?

Based on historical evidence of Yamaha's ability to produce a R-E-L-I-A-B-L-E series of 4-stroke engines up to and including the F115. Mercury's design has no track record at all...That doesn't mean that the Mercury is bad. It just means that between the two the Yamaha is a safer bet. A performance comparison between the two is not particularly important to me as I'm sure each engine, at one RPM or another, exceeds the other in useable hp. Since I loathe all 4-strokes I have no bias between the two brands as I wish a pox on both. And the Mercury, in the long term, may prove to be equal to or superior to the F115. But as of today I wouldn't want the Mercury on the back of my boat. I would take one if it was free...But, then I would sell it to someone else and put a nice DFI outboard on.
