Ok recently I came on and asked about a motor that came with the boat I am trying to fix up for the first time, However I have since given up on the motor and saw a 1958 Johnson 10 HP motor for sale and I am thinking of getting it however I was wondering how best to fit it to the steering mechanism on the boat? Is it as simple as hooking it onto the new motor or should I be looking at removing the arm that comes on the new (1958) motor and attach the steering mechanism there. If I Am not making sense with my questions forgive me I am new to this type of stuff ( meaning boating and restoring). I guess what I am mainly asking is how to attach the steering to the motor, also would this be enough on a 14ft boat? thanks for all your help

OMC made a bracket that fit on the front of the forward lifting handle. It accepted a dual cable connection or could be made to accept a push/pull cable.

You will need dual handle controls for the gear and throttle. There were brackets that mounted to the side of the engine to accept the cables.

You won't find these parts at dealers. I suggest you contact Twin City Outboard (Google Search). They are an outboard salvage yard. They may have the brackets attached to an old engine.

Yep. I had a QD19 ('58) on my small pontoon boat with remote steering and remote controls and it worked great. You just need the right connectors though but they are the same for almost all the old Evinrudes and Johnsons from the mid 50's to late 60's... and maybe further but I dont have any 70's engines so I dont know!...

here's some pics,

top is steering wheel with Drum Pulley cable system and controls

middle is the engine connector to the top picture ( i have this connect to a 1993 40 hp johnny)

the bottom is a modern connection but still use the old connector at the motor. i made this connector, out of a piece of angle.

So 1730V you are saying I would still need to retrofit something onto the motor for the controls? Is there something on the older Motor that I can transfer to the 1958 motor to accept the controls?

Tashasdaddy I looked at your photos and in the last one there is a black box like unit attached to the motor what is that? Thanks again guys I am glad I have someone here to guide me as I would totally loose my mind and pocket book in doing this . You guys are great

I left a message for the seller of the motor to see if he ever connected it to controls for the trottle ETC. hope this is not going to be difficult or am I just being paranoid here
