Wanted to know if any of you have experience with this. I have a 1992 200HP Mercury. I need to remove the yoke to replace the lower bushing right where it hooks to the lower part of the trim housing. Has anyone done this and does the powerhead have to be removed? Thanks.

Re: Remove yoke to replace bottom bushing

If I understand what you are planning to do is to replace the lower swivel bushing? If so, I think you need to remove the upper shift shaft and the steering rod. Removal of the upper shift shaft requires removal of the powerhead on most, if not all of the Mercs. I also think you wil need to remove the steering rod as well. That is connected to the midsection via the ride-guide rubber mounts. I also think you need to remove the powerhead to get to these.

Why do you want to replace the bushing? They get a bit loose, but it has little effect on the motor.

Well, my shift shaft actually broke down near the gear on the lower unit. It appears the shift shaft is stainless steel but the gear part is made out of pot metal. Yes, the lower swivel bushing has some up & down play. I was told this could have contributed to the failure of the shift shaft but not quite sure about that. I did run aground doing about 25mph - I am sure that didn't help.

I just didn't want to replace the shift shaft and it break anyway. I am sure I will get some response from this, but I plan to replace the shift shaft without having to pull the powerhead. I have already cut the old shaft right where it is visible where it comes out of the yoke. I plan to cut the new shaft and weld the 2 together right below the yoke with a stainless steel sleeve to join the two. I have found a welder who can weld stainless. He is a retired marine welder who said that he can make the shift shaft stronger than ever.

I think this will beat pulling the powerhead!

OK, I had thought you wanted to replace the bushing. I do not think that caused the breakage of the shift shaft, but you need to find out what did and fix it.

Pulling the powerhead is not a big deal. You need to have a way to hoist it up 4-5 inches. I use a wimpy block and tackle attached to a 1/2 lag screw I put in the garage door header. It works OK.
