you all have been great helping get my 69 115 running like a clock. winter is getting ready to set in and i'm thinking of repowering. i've got a chance to pick-up a 78 (no model numbers yet) 175 basket case for free, the owner says it's got a cracked block. i've got a source of sub-list parts, but was wondering, is this a super severe case of neglect i should stay away from or is this something the 78's are prone to? i've got all winter to work on it. thanks to all

A lot of the older crossflows suffer from ring failure due to carbon on the piston. Where is the block cracked? If it took out a rod and piston and a head, you may not have much to work from. A rebuildable block and good crank are essential to starting the rebuild. You can get it for the parts-the old-style lower unit has value, but you may need another donor block anyway. There are plenty of old V6 crossflow parts still around. They are inexpensive HP. It's bascially a 150 with larger carbs. Is this a freshwater engine?

I understand it's cracked between cylinders. Because I'm unfamiliar, does this have oil injection that could have gone bad? Yes it's a freshwater motor.

No oil injection in 78. Just two in-line simple fuel pumps. I'm sure it has run it's life on a straight 50:1 mixture. Unusual for a crack between the cyls. More typical of a crack in the port bridges in the cylinder.
