Hi team.

I have been asked if my 1989 110HP 2-stroke is a looper. It's model number is A-J110TXCEM.

I aslo want to know if another donk I am intereested in (1994 115HP BJ115TLERC) is a looper.

A looper is apparently better.

What is a looper? How do I tell if I have a looper?

I have been told loopers are better because they have more efficient combustion, consume less fuel with more torque, quieter, smoother and are just better all around. Loopers apparently never have a bubbleback and pretty much have a flat piston (not the lopsided and pushed up one) and different looking carbs.

Is this all true?

Was there a specific timeframe in years where loopers were made?

Any related links would also be good.

Thoughts?

Re: Looper Johnson Outboards

Neither of the mentioned models is a looper. Loop charging is a different method of getting the fuel/air charge from the crankcase into the cylinders. On a crossflow, the charge comes in one side, hits the deflector dome on the piston which directs ti up towards the top of the cylinder and pushes the remaining burnt gasses out the exhaust on the other side. Very briefly, a looper accomplishes mainly the same thing except the intake ports are cast in and aimed toward the top, no deflector pistons needed. Supposedly, the aimed incoming charge "loops" or swirls in such a way that it better scavenges the exhaust out. Yes they are more efficient and have lighter recriprocating loads. Loop charging first appeared in 1968 on the 55hp three cylinder motors. The only way I can answer questions such as yours as to whether a certain specific model has it is to go to the BRP parts website and look....which I did.

Many thanks mate.

Could a malfunctioning coil (hence no spark from one plug) cause the engine not to start in ocean (more back pressure) - but can start on ear muffs at home? If so, which coil woudl i tbe?

Re: Looper Johnson Outboards

you would have to check spark as has been mentioned before. run the motor on muffs till it gets to operating temperature, and recheck spark.
