Re: boats on a budget

Hey its nice to know someone is still reading this. Anyways for the silicone it is pure silicone not the kitchen and bath type of caulking. It is the same type of silicone that you could use to seal a fish tank. I just use one that is colored for using on rain gutters, this way it matches the boat. Also since pure silicone is not paintable, I then put a light coat of regular caulking over it, then paint it with Cover Stain brand primer, which adheres to most anything. Then I can put the finish color on it. I do know for a fact that this will work, as I am a painting contractor and this is how we prep when people use pure silicone where they should have just used regular caulking. Its easier than digging it all out and doing it over. I appreciate your input though, because reading these forums always gives me new ideas to try. To answer your question though I use the silicone for sealing where the pieces I put in under the seat meet the boat, to seperate the boat up in sections. This way if water gets in through the seams or wherever, it will stay in that part of the boat. I have also used it in some of the seams that leak even after tightening the rivets up. It sticks extremely well and is hard to remove after it cures.

Warlord! Glad to see you posting again!

How do you plan to drain out any water that gets in that front compartment? Are you going to install seperate bilge pumps? Keep up the good work and the updates!!!

Sorry it took so long to post a reply. To answer your question though, I am not putting any bilge pumps in the boat. The boat is only 10 feet long and I am making it so that each section of floor will come out. Which will only be two areas. The bow is easily accessible and the rear area, the deck will come off. So a sponge and bucket should do the trick. Its not like I am taking it out to sea hahaha! Plus I have tested the boat in my pool and it looks to be leak free, so far. New pics coming soon that will show what I am talking about.

Warlord & Mr. Stuart,

I just wanted you guys know that you have inspired me to rebuild/restore my 14' Klamath Trailorboat. I recently purchased the boat and this thread is giving me a ton of great ideas. Do you both of your boats have drainplugs? Mine does not and I was thinking that may be a good upgrade.

Cheers,

I have an opportunity to pick up a 1956 Lyman, lapstrake, 6 cyl flathead powered wooden boat quite cheaply. It is an 18ft model I believe must have been intended for use as a launch. It has two wheels, one on the side and one in the stern to navigating with.

Looking for opinions/knowledge on this boat.

Four days without a single response. You'd think on a forum the size of this one, somebody would have something to say.

It would be better to start a new thread rather than post unrelated material on the tail end of someone elses thread.

I belong to several forums for hobbies I have and this is the only one where form and etiqutte seem more important than subject matter. I searched and searched and searched for the right place to make my post in this case and felt that a topic titled "boats on a budget" was the correct place to ask a question about a boat I can buy for $1,800. I guess I should have asked one of the grand poobah admirals around here "may I make a post sir" before posting. Did I join some exclusive Yacht Club and not a general boating forum as I thought ?

Tell you what, delete my account on this site and I won't be a problem for anyone. I wasn't being sarcastic I was stating my feelings. If that's an issue then I don't belong here.
