Re: boats on a budget
Hey its nice to know someone is still reading this. Anyways for the silicone it is pure silicone not the kitchen and bath type of caulking. It is the same type of silicone that you could use to seal a fish tank. I just use one that is colored for using on rain gutters, this way it matches the boat. Also since pure silicone is not paintable, I then put a light coat of regular caulking over it, then paint it with Cover Stain brand primer, which adheres to most anything. Then I can put the finish color on it. I do know for a fact that this will work, as I am a painting contractor and this is how we prep when people use pure silicone where they should have just used regular caulking. Its easier than digging it all out and doing it over. I appreciate your input though, because reading these forums always gives me new ideas to try. To answer your question though I use the silicone for sealing where the pieces I put in under the seat meet the boat, to seperate the boat up in sections. This way if water gets in through the seams or wherever, it will stay in that part of the boat. I have also used it in some of the seams that leak even after tightening the rivets up. It sticks extremely well and is hard to remove after it cures.
