Greeting All, and thanks in advanced for your assistance. I purchased a boat recently and this weekend I had her on the water for the third time. When I went out this time the motor would not shift into reverse. Prior to this trip I could shift into reverse, and when I did, I could hear the gear or clutch engagne. This time, nothing. I have what I belive is a 1997 Mercury 225 hp, V-6 3.0l outboard. Below is a picture if that helps. I have been reading posts on loss of reverse and not quite sure where to start. I ordered a manual today and it should be here in a few days so I will have it for next weekend if I need to pull the lower.

Any initial trouble shooting would be greatly appreciated. As you can see, this is my first post, and my knowledge of boat engines is at about the same level. However, I do believe I am mechanically inclined.

Re: Lost Reverse

Check to make sure the shift linkage is allowing it to engage reverse complety. Does it make any noise when you go to reverse. It could be a gear but generally there is a griding sound when it is engages.
