Tilt and Trim Problems

I have a 93 Model 120hp Johnson and when I went to the lake yesterday the tilt and trim wouldn't work at the steering wheel. It would work with the switch on the motor and the switch at the front of the boat. Any suggestions???

Re: Tilt and Trim Problems

Loose wires at the throttle switch or a bad switch. I lean towrds the loose wires because the odds are that both contacts at the switch did not go bad at the same time.

I was kinda thinking it might be the wiring but I didn't know for sure. Does anyone know enough about the wiring that could narrow it down. I kind figured the switch in the front would be tied in with the one on the throttle so if one messed up they both would but I was wrong in that thought process?????

The switches are all in series. If it was the wiring you'd, most likely, lose the 2 at the front. If one switch goes bad the others will still work. It may still be the wiring related to that switch but most likely is the switch. Unplug that switch and jump the wires. If it works then, it's the switch or the wiring from the plug to that switch.

I appreciate your guys help and hope to be able to figure this out without another expensive trip to a mechanic. Trouble is when I got to looking last night I never could figure out how to remove my throttle handle to get to the wires and my switch....what's the combination???

Hey Shamus...what did you mean about it being the wiring at the motor??? I finally got into the throttle yesterday and all the wires look okay but I haven't tried jumping across them yet....there is a red, green, and blue wire..anybody know which one is the hot wire???? I'm assuming the red but my assumptions are generally WRONG!!!

Green and blue are up and down, on mine they are anyway.

Correct, green is down "like the grass", blue is up "like the sky", and the red is the live or hot wire.

Re: Tilt and Trim Problems

I truly do appreciate you guys helping me with this. I'm almost ashamed to say that after two evenings of "cyphering" and testing I found that I had pulled the wires apart when I mounted my new depthfinder. The trim wire had a connection plac about 18 inches from my throttle for some reason and the wire had pulled out.....least I found it and it didn't cost me anything but some time....Thanks again....Wade
