Yesterday I saw the movie "open water; on tv.. I recalled the time a large shark was stalking me in the surf and a bystander with binoculers saw it and warned me. I saw its fin just moments before and it was only about 10 feet away. Anyone else have a shark story to share?

Re: shark attack

been close to them many times out in the surf, but two very close calls come to mind. I was surfing down in Jupiter FL \, very clear water that day, as i was sitting on my board a HUGE school of bait surrounded me, then all the sudden something huge slammed into my legs and i quickly layed down on the board, put my legs in the air and started to paddle, i looked down and saw about a 5 footer under my board, dont know what species, she was light brown, maybe a lemon. i caught the next wave, rode in on my belly and called it a day!!! the other occasion I was duckdiving under a wave and came up to see a HUGE shark breaking the water no more than 3 feet in front of me.. this one was dark grey with her pectoral fin sticking about a foot out of the water and what i guess was her tail fin trailing about 3 feet behind, from the distance between those fins im guessing she was every bit of 6 feet long. eeeekkkk! a friend of mine was bitten on the foot once by a small shark. took something like 50 stitches.

Thankfully enough, I don't have a shark story. I go to Cocoa Beach, Fort DeSoto Beach and Daytona beach about once per year. I will not go in the water any deeper than my knees. I don't know a whole lot, but I do know I can run alot faster than I can swim and I have never seen a shark run.

Re: shark attack

SCUBA diving/spear fishing outside Kewalo Yacht Basin in Honolulu in about 1956. About 25' deep, over the reef. I was trailing a couple of parrot fish on a long stringer about 10' behind me.

There was a sudden jerk on my stringer line. I looked back and a brownish shark about 12' long had my fish and the end of the stringer in its mouth. I very quickly released the stringer from my belt and prepared to fend the critter off. Not needed. It turned and swam away with my stringer trailing.

My diving buddy witnessed the incident and laughed so hard he had to surface to keep from choking. He told me later that "Brudda Jack" was well known in the area for stealing fish from fishermen but had never molested one of his benefactors.

Re: shark attack

Year: 1989
Place: Red Sea off Jeddah
Activity: SCUBA diving
Incident: Bull Shark (guessing about 8' long) rammed me pretty hard. After getting a taste, it came back at me. Fortunately, there was a 12 gage 3" Magnum Slug power-tip on the end of my air-powered spear.
Result: 2 cracked ribs and a dead Shark (filleted the suckah). Cleared the water pretty quick after that because there was a LOT of blood in the water (maybe a bit of Urine too).
Subsequent decision: Always, ALWAYS have a power-tip when diving in waters known to have Sharks present.

Mmmmm ... shark steaks! Yum! But a nasty way to get them! Glad you survived and ate the shark instead of him eating you!

Not a shark story, but when I was snorkling in Cozumel, I dove down to about 8 or 10 feet and was sorrounded by Barracudas. They were between 3 and 5 feet long. Big mouths with lots of teeth. They just hung there and watched us. I headed back to the boat pronto. The Captian said they generally don't bite unless you have shiny stuff like watches and rings on.

Re: shark attack

During most of my naval diving training we had to deal with sharks.Mostly hammerheads and coral black and white tips. The hammerheads used to come and see us dive while the black tips were less curious.
In the Straits of Tiran we had a favorite hole in the coral that we would sit in and we'd see the sharks swim over head.We always had 3 foot shark prods with us.They would give a very powerful jolt to any overly curious shark.
There were also plenty of barracudas in the 4 foot range. They'd swim right along with us, but they were never aggressive.
One fish took the cream. It was a big green Napoleon wrasse about 5 feet long and 3 foot high.It would come right up to us and expect to be fed.We used to give it eggs and it would very carefully take them out of our hand and sort of inhale them.
Until today I still believe that the Red Sea is the most beautiful place for diving.

Re: shark attack

This spring we were anchored in the Stono River here, just south of the Wadmalaw Sound in the ICW. I was swimming about 40' behind the boat, and several pelicans showed up and started diving. I was getting a little nervous (pelicans=bait fish=things that eat bait fish) and then I heard a ruckus behind me. I looked over my left shoulder to see a shark take a pelican under, about 20' away from me. He was on the top of the water for a few seconds as he wrestled the bird down, my GF was freaking out (on the boat watching), and I was kind of in shock for about 2 seconds, and then I headed to the boat as fast as I could. We saw his fin a couple more times in the next ten minutes. I waited about an hour before I got back in the water. I felt like I was in a National Geographic special...

Re: shark attack

A Barracuda, which is basically a swimming mouth with lots of sharp teeth, will generally not bother you.
However, when under them near the surface, if the Sun glares off your mask.........watch out.

They can accelerate from dead-still to a trebillion miles per hour in 1 nanosecond and they WILL strike at your mask.

I know about that too (and Green Morays, Sea Snakes, Turkey Fish, Lion Fish, Fire Coral, those black Urchins with lots & lots of very sharp quills, etc.).

And, Boy, do I have a story about a Green Sea Wrass that'll have you in stitches.

Been a long time since I've been in the water but with almost 1,000 hours of bottom time, there's a lot to tell. Some of it's pretty darn funny.

Call me a coward. Simple Motto: Everything in the ocean has teeth, everything with teeth will bite = do not go in the water. The ocean is for boating and fishing, Swimming I reserve for pools and freshwater lakes.

Not only do you have gators in south Georgia, you got snapping turtles, snakes, big alligator gar, cat fish the size of cars or trucks (probably big enough to swallow you whole), and I'm sure there are some other creepy crawlys around.

I have only been swimming in the ocean 1 time and not even 10 minutes being in the water the life guard called out shark so we all got out. One of our campers got swept away from an under tow, he did make his way out of it though.

If you guys would stop takeing cats swimming with you the sharks might leave you alone. Its the smell. Oh ya, I stuck my head in the mouth of one of the prop sharks they used in JAWS one time while it was in a warehouse. Does that count? Used to snorkel with sand sharks in the P.I.....ANIMAL :D
