Anyone out there know much about the GM Duromax Diesels? I am considering buying a quality used one and I'm curious as to their evolution with respect to hp/torque....problems?
Everything I've experienced with them (work rentals, etc) and heard about them has been pretty positive so far. To my knowledge somewhere around 2004?-ish their power climbed a bit?....sound right?
I'm trying to get an idea as to the best year (forward) to start looking and considering for purchase (....unless I go gas, not my preference tho')
As well...how do you guys, who have switched from gas to diesel, like the change? would you go back?
...lookin' forward to you comments!!
Thanks.

Re: Duromax Diesels- best hp/torque?

I have a 2005 Duramax and I love mine, no problrms what so ever. 2004 and older had some injector problems that where delt with trough a recall. In 2006 models they increased HP/Torque by 50HP. i believe they are 350HP/450 torque. When you put the pedal down it will push you back in your seat. They will pull anything and are the quietest diesel on the market. The Duramax stems from a joint effort between Isuzu and GM. And they hit on a winner. anyone who owns one probably wont part with it unless they are getting a new one.:)

Good luck.

Windy...good info. That hp figure you listed sounds like what I've been reading about although the torque figure (450) sounds low...I thought all of them were getting into the 500's? (are the new ones into the 600's?).
Now that said this kind of power range is more than enough for my needs.
Did the Allison trans come with both a 5 and an optional 6 speed?

The 05' came with an allison 4 speed+ tow mode. I believe the 06' is a 5 speed and tow mode. What a great ride they have. You probably need to go test drive one.

As for horse power and torque, you should see the differance a bully dog system makes on that set up. As long as you like smoking tires clean off.:)

1) Whats a 'bully dog' system?
2) I assume the 06's will get slightly better mileage due to the extra gear?
3) From what I've read this will get better mileage than the gas 1/2tons (5.3litre)...is that correct?
The ones I've had experience with are all late model 06/07 (previous model) rentals...and I loved them (even my wife loved them).

660 lb.ft?....hmmmm, I guess that would do it.
Now to consider the fact that oil just hit $100/barrel....maybe a smart car with a heavy hitch (...or not).

Re: Duromax Diesels- best hp/torque?

I've got an 02 Dmax which was listed at 312 HP (stock) when I bought it new. However, I Put an Edge Attitude programmer with 5 power levels in a little over a year ago which adds HP on demand (when you need it.) Also added a cold air intake which with the programmer boosts up to 392 HP (power level 3) on the built in programmer Dyno. Need the exhaust upgrade to run level 4 and above to keep EGT down which I would presume would be pushing over 425HP....YIKES.

FYI.....Banks also has a bolt on performance turbo which they claim will add 10% more HP but must have the exhaust upgrade to perform effectively. Add this combo with a programmer and you have a big step up in horse power.

Other than normal preventive maintenance, My DMax has been trouble free for the past 5 yrs. and never fealt I had a power deficit.

All of our DuraMax engines at work run a Superchips programmer. Its hard to keep the tires from spinning! Power out the A**.
The Dodge i drive is scary with the Superchip also. Fun to drive.
The 07 and newer Chevys really boosted horse power. That new Allison tranny is great!

Re: Duromax Diesels- best hp/torque?

I heard that all of the Allison transmissions were pretty good....is there a big difference in the new ('07) series to previous years?
What about the mileage comparisons with the Diesel vs. the 1/2ton gassers? (sounds like it might be a little better?....anyone with experience on this comparison?)

Heres how I see the gas issue. The gassers are probably getting a little better rite now. But diesel fuel is usually cheaper. I imagine that during this war effort the diesel is in higher demand rite now, since everything the military uses runs on JP8, thus driving the price up over unleaded.:(

Overall diesel is about 10 to 15 cents higher than gas in this area. The new Chevy 3500 Duramax diesels average about 19 to 21 mpg empty.Better than Ford or Dodge. That is still better than you will get with a gas engine in that size of truck.
My next truck will be a Chevy diesel for sure.
