I have a 1976 merc 1500. I read in one of the threads from emckelvy that stated to remove the vent jets on the carbs as this makes the engine run better. What is your opinion?

Re: Question for Laddies

The back drag jets as merc calls them are actually bowl vents to lean down midrange, there are the first thing to go in the trash around here. They do lean the engines midrange, in some cases to the pointy you can burn a piston and in most cases give a midrange flat spot. I would remove them on my engine

Thanks Laddies,
I respect your opinion as I have spent the time reading all that pertains to my engine on this site (which has taken nearly a month and a half at work during down time). You are an asset to this site. I also orderd my water pump parts from iboats. Thanks a million for you wise info on this site.

Laddies,
Once removed do I need to make any adjustments to the carbs?

Re: Question for Laddies

You should not have to the jets are in the float bowl to restrict the float bowl vents and at mid range the crab have a hole drilled into the venturi and vacuum the float bowl the vent jet then increases the vacuum causing the fuel level in the bowl to drop and lean the mixture at idle and WOT they have no effect on the mixture
