Reading "Tie off those ladders" in stupid human tricks reminded me of a concussion I received a couple of years ago. Please share yours for a good laugh. Here's mine:

I had severe concussion from playing Flag Football two years ago. (Yes, FLAG football). (A bunch of 30 somethings playing rec league fball). One of my teammates weighs about 270/280 lbs and I weigh about 150...Anyway I dived at the QB for the other team and he (my teammate) was coming around the other side. My forehead hit my teammates thigh and snapped my head back. Knocked me out I think for a sec or two. Anyway at the ER, this is the conversation:

ME: "Man, my head hurts. What did I hit?"
Wife: "You hit Corey." (Corey being the teammate)
ME: "I hit Corey?!" He's on my team"
Wife: "Yes you hit Corey. Don't you remember?"
ME: "No."

5-7 minutes pass:

ME: "Man, my head hurts. What did I hit?"
Wife: "You hit Corey."
ME: "I hit Corey?!" He's on my team"
Wife: "Yes you hit Corey. Don't you remember?"
ME: "No."

5-7 minutes pass, repeat same conversation...

My wife swears this went on all night at the ER till we went home and I went to bed. She STILL will say (tongue in cheek):
"Man, my head hurts. What did I hit?"
whenever I do something stupid. She loves using that against me. :D

Re: Concussion Stories

I assume they did a "cat scan" or MRI to insure you had no internal bleeding so you are lucky. Did you have unusual fatique the week after? With a MTBI (mild tramatic brain injury ) sometimes even your personality can be altered for a period of time, and short attention recall also be afected. Note you dont have to be knocked out to suffer damage from this type of accident. I was rear ended by a speeding car while I was stoped for traffic several years ago which knocked my van into another vehicle causing a total lose to all 3...It can be hell. good luck

Re: Concussion Stories

I "think" I had an MRI (maybe it was a catscan) at the ER. Then had to come back the next day for the other...The one I remember was the one the next day where they had me lay flat on my back and pulled me into this long white tube that was very noisy. Actually I guess that was the MRI so I think I had the catscan at the ER. Only remember a few details of the ER....

One thing I do remember was one of my teammates who knows I'm a huge Redskins fan was making up stuff about how the Redskins had lost 7 straight and fired Joe Gibbs...(This was November of 2005). I was horrified until my wife told him to stop making sh** up and screwing with me. :D

At the actual time of the concussion I had lost approximately 3 months of memories. Couldn't remember going to San Francisco...Apparently argued with my wife that I had never been to San Francisco and had gone 2 months earlier....that crap was scary...Scares me now typing that as a matter of fact. Thankfully after a good nights sleep and a painkiller for the massive head ache, all memories returned (I think).

P.S. Just saw that you're in Charlotte, NC. I used to live in NC (Wilkesboro) until last year but live in Middle TN now. I miss NC sometimes but I think I like it out here better :D

Re: Concussion Stories

I've had about 7 of them. No brain damage as I've had brain scans, MRI, CT scan, the test with the dye, and a couple hundred or so x-rays.

At about 15 yo a freind and I was throwing track hooks (they look like a j and weigh about 7-8 lbs ) up on the old telephone line and trying to hang them. One of his hooked and I bent down to get another one. As I was bent over his turned loose and hit me behind the ear. That left about 2" scar and a real bad headache.

At 16 I was hood surfing. At about 45 mph my friend hit the brakes and I was gone. They said I went about 20 feet before my feet hit the ground and I stood up and flew over backwards. I slid on my back about 15 more feet before coming to a stop. I could hear them talking about whether or not I was dead and whether or not to leave me or take me home. Fortunetely they loaded me in the car and realised I was alive when I puked all over everything. When they got me home my Mom started slapping me around hollering that I was drunk. It took my freinds showing her the blood running down my back to convince her I wasn't. At the hospital they dug rocks out of my back and azz for hours. Slept for a couple of days and all was well again.

Great freinds I had back then huh. Those same freinds are still are still around and we would still do anything for each other 20 years later.

Lots more stories to tell but for some reason I can't remember them......

Re: Concussion Stories

Got smacked from behind at 55mph+ while stopped at a red light.
I kicked myself out of the window and went up to the car in front of me and started talking to them.
Next thing I remember I was in the hospital under an x-ray machine.
I guess I had made a phone call to my buddy and told him I was going to come over and I had told the person in front of me that they were making me late for work.
I found out later I was pretty talkative untill I finally passed out and was unconscious for about 20 minutes in the ambulance and hospital. The witness reports were quite funny to read. Sounded like I was a lunatic...:D
I don't remember a thing besides pulling up to the red light.... and then waking up to a dark room.
I couldn't look up or turn my head or I would get dizzy and lose my balance for two weeks.

Re: Concussion Stories

I was walking through my dark barn one evening with an armload of hay for the critters and tripped on something. I went down so fast I didn't even have time to put my hands out to slow the fall, and I hit my face on the edge of a 1x12 that was up on edge as part of the livestock feeder. I might have been out for seconds or minutes, but next thing i knew I was laying there on top of the hay with my face resting on the board. It took a minute to be able to stand up and there were stars everywhere, just like in the cartoons. I had a bone chip floating around in my face for months.

1963, 10 years old and climbing trees.
Went up this big ol willow tree about 15 foot or so and limb broke.
Here I went down going vertical and feet caught next limb and then was horizontal.
Flat of my back. Bam!
Out like a light they say for an hour.
Woke up in hospital ER.
Nurses and Docs was wanting to know why my face was so red.
Mom piped in and said.
"That is where I was smacking him to get him to come to"
Moms, you gota love em.

Re: Concussion Stories

You know, the actual injuries themselves aren't funny, but the things we do when we've been concussed sure are funny. I'm sorry, but there are some really funny things that go on when the brain is involved. After you know the person is going to be ok all?

I guess we make jokes and laugh about it because we were so worried at the time...it helps us deal with the fear even years later I guess.

Oh, and after watching my Redskins get slaughtered yesterday by New England, I wish I could do something to forget... :D

I used to work in ICU and had, on occasion, head trauma patients. The thing I noticed most about them is they wouldn't keep thier clothes on. Young women mostley. I guess they don't like the tactile stimulation of things touching thier skin.

Re: Concussion Stories

valkyr I know the feeling about needing a new career when I got out of the navy i decided I was gonna try riding bulls and bareback horses. After 15 concussions in a 2 year period and multiple shoulder , elbow injurys and 2 knee surguries I decided it wasn't for me. Now 10 years later going through knee problems again thinking working on my feet on the concrete all day might heve to go away also .

Re: Concussion Stories

All of mine were from car accidents but my sister had a good one. She was 15, I was 14, halloween night, throwing eggs and being hellians in a small town. Just got done egging a police car and they were chasing us. She turned around to see where they were, turned back, face first into a telephone pole. I was laughing so hard that I couldnt run anymore. The police called our parents, told them how serious it all was and we took her to the hospital. She had a bunch of little lines on her face from the staples on the telephone pole where people hang up lost pet posters and such. It still cracks me up.

Barn horse

You can't get a barn horse to do much at all until you get him pointed back toward the barn. Then he'll run. I was about 13 years old and riding this old horse bareback with just a halter (no bit) and reins. I rode him across the cow pasture down to the gate. Once I got him turned back around he took off back toward the barn. I tried to slow him down, but with no stirrups there's no way to dig in. With only a halter he doesn't care if you pull back anyway. Well, the trail came to a fork with a big cedar tree in the middle. The horse went left and I kept going straight into the bottom of that cedar tree. I don't remember how I got back to the house.
