just got done bolting up and testing after overboring one cylinder and replacing rings on another. 120, 110, 120, 110 on cylinders. all new gaskets from power head/exhaust on up. cranked it up on the muffs and had water out the pee hole but head covers were getting hot. shut down before alarm went off. noticed warm water coming out the cowling on the front. pulled lower unit and replaced water pump. while i had the lower unit off i blew air up the water tube. i pulled the two water hoses that go to the thermostats and put short garden hoses on. air comes out both hoses but i still can detect air in front. do i need to make sure the water tube has not disconnected at the top or what next? Thanks for any replies in advance.

i havent put the lower unit back on after i installed the new water pump. are you saying it could be that the lower end of the water tube was not in its proper place before i took the lower unit off? if that were the case would the water rise up through the exhaust area and exit the front cowling? that might explain the water being warm. i will be careful putting the lower unit back on, but i am wondering if the upper portion of the tube can be out of place. i want to try running water up the tube befor i put the lower unit on to try and pinpoint the exit from the proper path.

That is exactly what I would do. Remove 1 thermostat at a time, and run compressed air or water up the water line, making sure it exits at the t stat housing. Then run it down from the t stat housing to the water line. And like TD said, that rubber grommet on top of the impeller housing often gets shoved into the impeller housing accidentally when bolting up the lu.

Well, just got through running water up throught he water tube with the lower unit off. the water is coming out the uppers steering arms area. if i tilt the motor up and turn the wheel all the way to the left, i can use a flashlight and look past the starboard steering arm towards the back of the motor and see water coming out. i guess this is the exhaust housing. its what i sat the powerhead on. i can see primer red paint in the area the water is exiting. is this a common problem after remounting the powerhead or water freezing with the motor in the transport position. sure dont want to pull the head again. if i open up the exhuast cover, will that let me see any better?

Follow the links here to an exploded view of your exhaust housing, it will let you see all pertaining seals and o rings.

the red circle is the area in which i see the water coming out. i've got this bad feeling the gasket is gone in this area. used a new gasket but i think in haste i forgot to use the sealant. not for sure but i think i did. could the pump blow the gasket out in this area and have water leak? or does the water come up somewhere else. either way, it looks like i need to pull the powerhead, take a look, and install another gasket PROPERLY. really, i hope thats all it is.
