Use your money wisely.
Buy the boat you want.
TRUCK it home.
Fix it properly while not in a hurry to get home a thousand miles away
Learn how it works.
Use it on short trips, then overnights, then weekends.
Then go for long cruises with experience and knowledge of the boat and how it works.
Small steps, not giant leaps, is how to get into boating without killing yourself or your family.
I never said to go willly nilly. He isnt charting across the gulf of mexico. If he stays near the coast
*sigh* I will have to just agree to disagree with the majority.
THis is 2007, almost 8. GPS systems, top notch emergency equipment, radios, cell phones etc...I would not be so worried about it.

For people that would like to make a run like the one discussed one day what do you mean "you will be out of sight of land for many hours". Are you saying you can't stay close to the coast with land in view the entire run

Well yes that is what I am saying.
Look at any map of Florida. Look at what is called the Big Bend area. The North East part of the Gulf at the Panhandle.
There are few to no marinas as you approach the panhandle. The few areas are not marked well and at low tide will be a problem. If you try to follow the shore you much reach Carabelle and fuel will be a problem. There isn't any.
Also the Gulf is shallow. At Crystal River for example it drops 1 foot per mile.
Two things wrong here. Shallow water becomes rough water quickly. And you have to stay off shore far enough to be sure of enough depth.
Now look what you have to do to clear places like Cedar Key. Gonna follow the shore and burn all that fuel?
Now you can get in at places like Horseshoe Beach with local knowledge perhaps but there is no fuel.
From there or maybe Steinhatchee you better set a course for Carabelle if you want a chance to have enough fuel. Or carry a lot of extra which will slow you down and burn more.
This idea is a terrible one given the total picture.
Anyone who suggests it isn't just doesn't have both oars in the water.
And likely you will need those oars.

yo guys....I think we are being a little harsh on AmynBill. I think if all 10 or 15 of us were standing around in person and shooting the breeze about this with DallasR, Billnamys response would not stand out so ....he's just offering some encouragement and enthusiasm. I am sure DallasR did not read all of these posts and say to himself "well Bill says its cool so here I go!!!".
Sorry, I just think "irresponsible" is a harsh word.
Just cause I love a good fight . . . in a previous thread, I am pretty sure that amynbill said he would only buy a new boat because he didn't want somebody elses problems . . . Sounds like a risk taker to me
Sorry man, your on your own. too much heat![]()
Some boating bulletin board isnt going to frazzle me too much![]()
That's probably because you don't ever have to do anything you claim you are willing to do and you don't have to prove you ever did any of the things you claim to have done.
I find it difficult to believe a person as irresponsible as you claim to be is actually responsible for so many people. More likely you are a twenty-something wanna-be. Just my opinion. Prove me wrong
"Geez, you really have to lighten up and go on..."
Ya know, this best said while looking in the mirror..
We get it, you're the best, you're the greatest, ya live 3000 miles away from me, so all is right with the world..
