You'll need to get a harmonic balancer puller (auto parts store). You have one, or know how to use it?

So it was the stator eh, good. You will also need a torque wrench to re install the flywheel, and a manual would help your first time. BUt like IW said, you need the puller first.

First you'll need to remove the keeper nut from on top of the flywheel. If you've got an air gun it's pretty easy. If not you'll need to use a strap-wrench or you can also put it in forward gear and use a block of wood to stop the prop from turning. If you think your prop hub isn't up to the task, I'd go the strap wrench route.

Once that's off, you can employ the puller. You'll thread the hardened screws into the holes in the flywheel and tighten the center bolt. Make sure the screws are well seated in the threads 1/2"-3/4" should do the trick. You may have to tighten that center bolt quite a bit. The flywheel will come off with a nice "pop". Once you lift that off, you'll see a keyway in the shaft that mates up with a slot in the flywheel (remember this for when you put it back on). Looking under the flywheel, it'll be pretty straight forward what you need to do to replace the stator.

Before putting the flywheel back on, clean off the crankshaft and keyway. Then align the flywheel and slide it back on. Be sure to torque the flywheel keeper nut down the the specified value. Skipping the torque step will sheer your flywheel key when you go to start it up next.

Before re install , check crankshaft and flywheel tapers for any traces of oil. This assembly must be perfectly dry. Swab tapered surfaces with solvent and blow dry with compressed air gun. Then inspect both tapers for burrs and nicks or abrasions. Replace the flywheel and nut but do not torue it down yet. First check for spark using a spark tester with the gap set to 7/16 of an inch. If the spark jumps it with a bright blue ZAP!!, tighten nut to torque specified in your manual, Im not sure what yours should be. Timing adjustment is made with a timing light. If the timing is off, a readjustment of the full advance stop screw is required.

Even at low rpms like on a spark test that flywheel can sheer a key if not properly torqued. Don't ask me how I know.

That is good to know, Ive always followed this procedure that has been in my manuals. Would there have been any other "pros" to writing this step into the flywheel re install procedure other than saving time of re pulling it if the spark is off?

Not that I can think of, and with a rattle gun to take it off the savings is minimal at best.

The other gotcha is that it's pretty easy to forget you haven't torqued it down properly after you've performed the test and inserted the plugs and put away the tester, and . . .

Don't ask me how I know that one either. I just torque it down properly as soon as it goes on now.

Hello Brown.
This is one thing I would not do by myself. Not because it is so difficult, but because In Webster you can go to Bill Mayer at Mayers marina and ask old Bill if he can please pop the flywheel off for you.Just come with the cowling off the engine and the nut already removed.Tell him that you are trying to learn and you have to replace the stator. He might even hook you up with a good used one.If you buy a stator from him he probably will not charge you for popping the flywheel which he will do in 2 or 3 minutes at most
The marina is next to the bridge across the channel between Irondequoit Bay and the Lake.
Good luck.
