Where can I find out how much torque to put on different bolts for a 1983 johnson 50hp. Model J50BELCTA. I just want to put the thermostat cover back on and possibly check the water passage area, but I would like to know how much torque to put on the bolts when reassemling. Is there a website with this information?

I'm not aware of a website with this information but no doubt someone from this forum will have the info. you require.

All the torque spec's and a whole lot more essential information can be found in an OMC repair manual for your motor. I would highly recommend you do your best to obtain one. They are usually available through ebay. I worked on a buddys engine last winter without a manual and it was a real chore. Then I worked mine over with a manual and what a difference. Best of luck. Rick.

These engines are cast aluminum with lots of 1/4-20 threaded screws, most times. a light touch, and common sense will work. A torqe wrench is for rod caps, head bolts, case halves. etc.

thanks guys, I did notice when I took it apart that they werent very tight to begin with. So I figured if nothing else I would just tighten them like a spark plug, just past snug.

I would listen to Ricks advice, and get yourself a service manual, it will pay for itself a million times over. The spark plugs are one thing that I would definately torque down though, 18.5 to 20.5 ft/lbs.

I don't know about this. Never torqued a plug in 50 years (but have a good feel for what I'm doing also). Some plugs have a crush gasket, some a "V" only. You should always use a new crush gasket when ya pull a plug, but who actually does. Ya DO have to remember it's usually a Alum head its going into, and they sure don't like strong arm, thats fer sure! Again, common sense.

I agree with Scaaty and I am sure that a lot of older readers like myself will too. I tighten hand tight and then use a offset box wrench. About 1/4 to 1/3 turn usually snugs the sparkplug unless the gasket is new.
