engine weight

I saw a 15hp Johnson the other day and it didn't look much bigger than my 6hp. It had two cylinders the same as my 6. How then, could it weigh so much more?

It is 250% as much engine made with a lot more heavy stuff.

A big block Chevy engine has 8 cylinders just like the small block. But it weighs a bunch more. Bigger motor requires a beefier lower unit. Bigger motor requires a bigger prop. Bigger adds weight.

The older 6 is 8.84 cu in the 15 is 13.2 50% more. Close to 3 times the hp with all the changes to handle the increased power.The 6 is about 56 lbs
the 15 is 77 I don't call that "so heavy"
If you want something with more power than your 6 the 8hp is basically the same weight as the 6.

Thanks guys. I'm not supposed to do heavy lifting so a few pounds does make a difference to me.

There you go the 8 hp short shaft that came out in 84 is 56lbs the same as your 6 so if you want 2 more hp thats the one for you.
If you wanted to be really careful about the weight you could remove the cover and prop you might save 2 or 3 more pounds.Prop might be a bit of a pain but it would also lessen the chances of dinging the prop as you move it around.

A 56 or 57 JohnnyRude 10HP weighs about the same as your 6hp. These 2 years have great reps.
