How bad is this?

I have a 2005 Mercury 225EFI. It quit on me last weekend about 30 miles from the boat ramp. I was cruising along and it just stopped like you switched the key off. It started back up but ran rough for about 10 minutes or so and then it leveled out like nothing ever happened. Made it back to the landing okay but figured it needed to be checked out. I had a mechanic check it out today and he found the lower left cylinder had 70 psi while the others were all 120 psi. Said most likely I had a broken ring and damaged cylinder sleeve. My warranty expired January 26, 2007. Lucky me. Would you repair only the damaged cylinder or go ahead and do them all even if the others show no damage? Also, how many benjamins can I expect to shell out for this repair? Thanks for your input.

Just make sure that whoever does the repair does some diagnostic work to figure out "why" that cylinder failed. Very often an engine rebuild goes bad again because the original cause was not identified (such as a bad injector for example) or poor oiling on that cylinder.

Re: How bad is this?

On 3 cylinder ski-doo,s middle piston is first to let go heat build up, we oversize no probs, but disbalance should have a small afect on performance. guess waterpump was weak or past RMP specs .rings only brake with a life time of low RPM,s then sold and full throttle in normal specs. piston in a low aspect will not reach hight in sleeve at a full RPM ..so when changing props expl more RPM it hits a wall braking rings.

guess oil pump is weak.
