solenoid for outdrive?

Just bought a boat, very new to the boating world and green so excuse my ignorance.

The outdrive will go down but it won't go up. Was told it was a $25 solenoid or possibly bad battery; where do I go to find this solenoid.

And it went up when I test drove it just won't now.

The boat is a '87 wellcraft classic 210 with the 305 v8.

Re: solenoid for outdrive?

sorry, thought that was clear

its a mercruiser outdrive. the motor identification number is OB558207. 1987 wellcraft classic 210 200hp 305 V8 with power steering.

the outdrive will go down but not up. I believe at the marina where I picked it up they said something about connecting another battery to it to get it to work, whatever they did they managed to get it to go up. I didn't really get the gist of what they were doing.

No, you never mentioned Mercruiser or what drive (still haven't mentioned what type drive).
The thing is, is not everyone knows what drive is in your boat. OMC, Mercruiser, Volvo. All different.

Anyway, I would guess you have an Alpha drive.
Go to the link below and download the OEM service manual. Then find the troubleshooting link and you will have all the testing steps and wiring diagrams to fix your problem.

Ayuh,.......

Right over there aft of your anchor, behind the seat back there should be the Trim Pump.......
It'll have 1 or 2 Solenoids mounted to it,...Depending on the model you have...

Just Jumper them,+ See if that's the Issue.........

More often than not,.... It's corroded Wiring,+ not the hard parts......

Re: solenoid for outdrive?

From your pictures, you DO have an Alpha I drive.
When you go to download the manual, you want manual #6 for your drive, and #9 for your engine if you want it also.

Re: solenoid for outdrive?

It's already been jumped; thats how they got it to go up when they put it on the trailer. So I know the solenoid is the problem, inspected all the wires going to it and they all seemed fine, nice and tight. Could the problem be elsewhere, like the switch on the throttle? What's the next thing I need to do?

Re: solenoid for outdrive?

Yes it could be the switch on the throttle handle. To test that try and jump from positive power to the small blue wire connected to the small posts on the solenoid. If the drive trims then the next spot to test is at the switch. If the drive doesn't trim then the solenoid is most likely bad.

PS: the pump could be on either side of the motor, it isn't limited to just one side of the motor.
