i took out the four bolts holding the lower unit, and it separated easily to a point. about six inches above the lower unit, it has a connection to the upper shift rod. i fully loosened the nut on the clamp. as much as i pulled and pounded, it wouldn't slide out. is there something else i have to undo? is there some pulling techinique i don't know?
please help. i'm a novice.

I think that the shift linkage clamp bolt must be completely removed, not just loosened.

go ahead and purchase a clymer or chilton repair manual it will save you a lot of frusration and money.

Purchase a Yamaha factory manual and not a generic manual. Never hammer and pound on anything unless you know exactly what you are doing.

Blocking needed only unscrew

The auction is only inverter and the transmission shaft

Never use hammer!

some of the later model tiny mites have a shift rod seal and retainer bolted under the midsection. you have to seperate the shift link connector and fully remove the nut from the lower shift shaft so the shaft can pass through the seal retainer.
its actually in the correct Yamaha service manual as well as some of the marine tech guides. it may or may not be in a clymers or seloc. they tend to be a few years behind
