Hello again

I have a 1992 Johnson 60hp (VJ60TLENE). I changed the gear oil and when I did I found metal shavings on the magnet, and a couple of chunks. I know this bad but just how bad is it? Do I need to look into new gears? If so how much am I looking at and where can I get them? I also thought I could file an insurance claim on it, has anyone done this? Also every other time I changed the oil there was nothing, and I'm sure I didn't hit anything. What are the signs I need to look or listen for? Sorry for all the questions but I'm not sure what to do.

Thanks

Powdery stuff on the magnet is sort of normal wear and tear. While not good, an occasional small chip happens sometimes. As they say, stuff happens. That's why you are changing oil. And yes, eventually over the long haul it will wear out. If you are finding excessive grindings in there and are having trouble keeping it in gear, it is already worn out.

Just wondering if you are being gentle when you shift gears? That is just exactly the WRONG thing to do. You should shift with a quick decisive movement. Gentle shifting where you hear a clatter, clatter, clunk sound as it goes into gear is bad. That noise is the shift dog and gear beating themselves to death, making chips. There should be only one solid clunk as it goes into gear if shifted properly.

Insurance claim? Do you have wear and tear insurance? Anything else would be fraudulent.

Re: Oh Boy

Thanks for your help. When I shift it clunks once, I let my friend drive it and I caught him babying it a couple of times so it did grind. Other then that it stays in gear just fine and never comes out. The insurance idea came from a friend who blew his gear box up on a rock. He called is insurance company and told them what had happened and they fixed it. Thanks again for the help!
