First post here so bear with me. I'm sure this subject has been beat to death. I have a 66 Johnson 20 hp that I have replaced every seal that there is but I still get water water in the gearcase. I did a search here but might have missed something. I have been told that the shift shaft can get worn at the seal location, Is this true? Should I replace the gromit at the top of the water tube? This motor runs like a top so this is starting to irritate me. Thanks.

Re: Leaky lower

The best way to check it would be pressurizing the housing and using soapy water look for leaking air, like an inner tube.I doubt the shift shaft has worn ,the seal would wear first. You may have a worn or bent propshaft, that wont allow the seal to do its job.Without a pressure pump like the pro.mechanics use I dont know how you can pressurize it to hold a constant pressure ,the ones pro mechanics use have guages as well, and you dont want to over pressurize it.SO the easiest, surest, would be to carry the lower to a shop and have it done.It shouldnt take but 30 min mostl

Re: Leaky lower

There are only a few possible places for it to leak. Drive shaft seal, prop shaft seal, o-ring around the prop shaft bearing, shift rod seal, and the spagetti seal and screw holes. If the parts are good and properly installed with the correct sealants, it won't leak. Assuming the shafts aren't excessivly worn under the seals or the case cracked.

Last ime I resealed it I put 10lbs of pressure to it and didn't hear anything. I'll try the soapy water test. Thanks.

Got a good dealer over in Lexington, Mo. Has tons of parts for older motors even though I know you can get these washers just about anywhere.

thanks
