1967 Johnson 20 hp cowl vs. 1960 Johnson 10 hp cowl

Here's a dumb question but it's important to me. I have a 1967 Johnson 20 hp tiller outboard. I need a 10 hp cowl for it. Does the cowl from a 1960 Johnson 10 hp fit this motor? They appear identical. I can't find info on this anywhere. There must be a ratty old 1960 10 hp cowl sitting somewhere on a motor that is no longer useful. Any suggestions or ideas? Thanks.

It's not such a dumb question. Trying to fool the warden on the 10hp lake, right? He might be smarter than he looks.

In the first place, the 1960 and 1967 covers are nowhere near the same. In the second place, while I don't have them here side by side I am pretty sure the 10 and 20 are different sizes, even year for year.

OK, so he's as dumb as he looks. Paint your cover and re-decal it.

Yup, FR is right as usual. They are different sizes and completely different styles. I got pulled over by the cops this spring testing a 10 hp on an unlicensed boat. Not that I'm a scoff-law I just picked up the boat that weekend and hadn't got it licensed, yet. It is licensed now. Anyway, the fella actually told me that if I just scratched off the "10 hp" no one would be any wiser. In fact, he didn't even look to see what the max rating for the boat was.

The OPP seem to be out in full force this summer eh WB. I think Ive been pulled over 10 times this summer for "routine inspections". Once I was apparently going 11 mph in a 10 mph no wake zone in a small fishing boat with no tach, my spider senses must of been off that day ;)

huh... I guess someone should sell repro 9.9 stickers then!

I'm on a river in Quebec just outside of Ottawa where we see a cop boat about once every 5 years... I've never registered any of my over 10 hp's... or any at all for that matter...

Come to think of it, they're due back next year or so!

But getting back to the original question Chet17, would you not need a 9.9 cover and not a 10 as technically the 10 is still illegal I thought?

Here is a pic of my 1963 10hp's hood on my 1967 20hp. You are right that from a distance they do look alike. The 10hp won't fit as the hood isn't wide enough tN clear the 20hp's flywheel. Nor is the hood tall enough. If I were you I would just repaint the hood you have and have a local sign maker make you some new vinel decals.

Cool. Thanks to everyone who responded, especially Riverjet502. I must have seen the 63 and not the 1960. That's pretty cool that you have both motors I was speaking about. It's a shame the cowls aren't interchangeable. That would have been too easy! Your 63 cowl looks brand new! As for repainting my 67 cowl....I can't. My grandpa gave me the motor years ago before he died and I'm not changing anything on it. It's in superb shape. I will just have to try and find a 10hp motor somewhere I guess.

Then the answer is to get a 2nd 20hp cowling and repaint it and keep the original and then use the new painted one. Still easier than getting an entire new 10hp.

No problem glad I could give you a visual. I would just pick up a second hood from an outboard salvage yard and re decal it. My 10 hp hood I painted back in 1991. I used 1985 GM frost white acrylic enamel. I had the local sign maker duplicate my original decals before I sanded the hood. It cost me like $20 for him to make them. I am hopping to find another 60?s 20hp this winter. I want to re-decal them to 18?s. I want to run twins on my jon boat but the name plate rating says only 35hp. lol.lol..

Heck, you might as well go all the way then and get twin 25's as in the late 60's all the 18's, 20's and 25's had the same 22 cu in block!

Yes, I think getting a 2nd 20 hp cowl and repainting it may be the answer. An older, worn looking cowl would be less obvious though. That was what I was hoping for. If I find one, maybe I'll rough it up after I paint it so it doesn't look new and tip off the game warden.

Tim's Outboard 218-682-2331 will be cheaper than TC Outboard.

I don't believe that cowl on Ebay will fit. It looks substantially different than my 67 cowl. I'll just keep searching for a spare that I can paint up to look like a 10hp.
TC outboard never replied to my email. Guess I'll be trying Tim's next.
