Help with Yamaha identification: 175AETO

Hi everyone, I recently purchased a 20' Mako with a Yamaha 175AETO (at least that's what it says on the bracket tag) with a serial number starting with 6G5.

The motor cowling appears to be off of a 200, but based on the model tag it's obviously a 175 I imagine.

Motor runs fine, shift shaft looks good (no corrosion). I know it's a 1980's era "precision blend" and was told it was a 1985. I'd just like to know what I have for when I order parts if I need them. I don't intend for this to be my "forever" motor, but as long as it runs I will use it for a few seasons.

I can't find this model in Yamaha's database and a google search brings up nothing.

I'm in the good ole USA.

From what I gathered from a bit of searching this may be an '83 model that was "squeeked" in my Yamaha when they were introducing the 84's in the states?

My plug wires are labeled "Hitachi 1983"

Am I on the right track? I guess I'd just like to know what to cross reference with to get parts for.

As you already know, Yamaha started selling Yamaha branded outboard motors in late 1983 as 1984 models. Prrior to that there were some companies that imported "world" market motors. I think that if you send a letter to Yamaha outboard world headquarters in Japan you should be able to find out what country your motor came from and what year it is. The first 175 hp motor sold in the US was a 1985 model. You can look-up the parts manual for the 1985 175 hp at yamaha-motor.com Another thing you can do is look at the tag again with a magnifying glass. Sometimes letters are easier to read and a "D" could get mixed up with an "O'. Sometimes old motors are more reliable than the new ones. I regularly use a 20 year old Yamaha 70 hp.

I took a look there during some searches, but based on that the letter "A" in the model is the model year of my AETO and that pins it as a 1993 model, which I believe is not the case for my motor (it is too old to be a 93).

I believe based on the "Hitachi 1983" plug wires, that this is most likely a 1983 model, precursor to those brought into the states.

Thoughts?

Go to the following URL. There is a chart to show what the letters in the model # mean. 175AETO is not the model #. The actual model# is on the mounting bracket on the starboard side. The 175AETO is on the port side of the bracket and I am not sure what AETO means. Only 200HP engines were introduced in the US in 1984. 150 and 175 were introduced in 1985. The model # for a 1985 175 Yamaha engine is as follows:

175ETXK or 175ETLK

150,175,200 = HP
E= Series
T= Power trim & tilt
X or L= Shaft Length (20" or 25")
K= Year (1985)

1984, 1985, and some early 1986, 150 to 200 engines used a single float chamber Takei carburetor and and most 1986 engines used a dual float chamber Nikkei carb. By identifying the carb type you can narrow down the year to 84-85. Single and dual float chamber carbs are easy to physically ID. I hope this helps.

if you go to that model guide and go to the column labeled "KOD" and scroll down to the 6G5 designation you'll see it calls out a 1983 175AETO or 175BETO
