Wow, I'm not the only one who stopped watching sstv? When it first started some of his statements were really lame but the projects interesting. Then he learned some boat stuff and it made the program better. Now, I think he has forgotten who the audence is that made the show a success. I flick the channel to another station when sstv comes on now.

This old house, and a couple others are on PBS, which you obviously have, if you have that feller SBN is talking about. Any clue when he comes on? I know it will change with different cable companies, but sometimes they keep them the same.

The Woodwright's Shop with Roy Underhill is the one I'm talking about.
He is on PBS.
Check it out on the PBS website.

I would love to see a show on boats, but I don't know of any on my dish network package, I believe I got the water channel I'm not sure but I have yet to see a show like that. I think there needs to be an overhauling (like the one with chip foose) but an overhauling show for boats. You bring the hunk of junk in they fix it up with detailed information on how to...... so on so on. I use to like watching monster garage though that was your mod show. Heck now a days I watch Iboats.com, instead of TV lol, the TV might be on but I don't pay it any attention.

TV is Mega BUX$$$, no matter what you are doing.

In defense of This Old House, house prices are through the roof regardless of what the media says. Besides, Bob Vila was a conceited jerk, IMHO. Norm Abrams is a craftsman, through and through. Tools, or no tools. Hooray for him. He deserves the respect he gets. I've learned a great deal from him.

I like the new This Old House Hour, on PBS. (no PBS fan here) Kevin is a much better spokesman (likeable) than Bob ever was. Plus, the "fix it" portion has some really great tips I could have used years ago. I still learn things.

As I referred to, "Redneck engineering" doesn't sell. TV is all about-SELL.

This Old House is about as close to reality as we'll get on TV. It's a huge success, even without our tax dollars supporting it.

With that said, I agree, I'd like to see a "regular guy" TV show. The problem is that the media is so huge, it doesn't see it. TV is all about-Glitz.

Although I hardley ever watched Jerry Springer, that had to be something to see on dock side chat :D:D. Y'all don't take this the wrong way because I know many of us work hard except for my but thats been unemployed (can't find a stinking job), I'm not calling us lazy but at least we get a little more exercise moving the mouse on the computer watching Iboats.com then holding the remote for the TV :D.

There you go! The internet has changed everything. The media hasn't woken up to that fact yet. They will, in twenty years. In the meantime, we get the bubble headed bleach blonde preaching doom and gloom.

It took some time but Detroit woke up to the foreign threat. They have met and are exceeding but it's a generational thing.

The TV generation will have to do the same thing.

Much better info. here!

I think there is one. It has a couple of the assistants, that are occasionally seen on "This Old House."

Haven't seen it much, but it deals with simple stuff, like installing decks, or sections of fences, or repairing aspects of houses. People write in needing help, so the guys go out and help them, and make a TV show out of it.

Maybe a "Pimp My Boat" show?
That would work also. Personally I like Overhauling over Pimp my ride lol. Maybe we can convince Iboats to start a show on boat overhauling :). I just need a little of the proceeds or finders fee for the idea :D.

Don't want "pimp", just fix.

There are enough Harley riders, out there, to keep me awake at night. Why do you guys feel a need to "open your pipes" at 03:00????? Now that the weather is cool, I cannot open my windows-still. All I hear is BLAAAAAAAAAATTTTTTTT, at 03:00.

Granted, the rice burners are just as annoying, if not more so.

iboats is the best at giving us real world experiences via word, pictures and sometimes video.

I just ordered, from iboats. The service is superb and at a great price.

I used to work in a home improvement store and those HGTV shows would have people believing they could remove old tile, level a floor, layout and set new tile, grout and seal their 200 square foot kitchen in a couple hours. Then they would look at me like I was giving them a hard time or trying to sell them things they didnt need when I tried to explain the process to them. They always came back to try and figure out how to fix the shortcuts they took too. Its nice to give them confidence but a little dangerous.
I've gotten some good tips from Norm Abrams. He's very good. But it does make me crazy when he says " just go out to your wood storage barn and grab a few pieces of black walnut, run it through your huge planer, now use your $20,000.00 joiner, spin a few things on your professional lathe and voila! a chippendale settee" Its fun to watch him but Ive gotten more practical, useful advice here on iboats.

I think Jonh G gained a lot of weight (as in his head enlarging) while filiming his SSTV. Now the guy is too big to get into little areas of little boats. Maybe that is why he has to promote the big gas guzzler yachts. After watching numerous shows, I still came out with "Yeah, I've done that, and that, etc"

I used to do home improvements on the side. Since so many shows to help the DIYer, my jobs got to be the ones to straighten out homeowners projects. Nothing worse than trying to fix someone elses mistakes. Then to top it off, while you are doing the work to get things back square and level, you got the homeowner telling you thats not the way they saw it on TV. Needless to say since it was optional to me to do these jobs, I quit doing them because of the so called DIY homeowner experts.

I liked TNN on Sunday mornings long ago. Mud races, buggy races, truck/tractor pulls, and events that showed the power being used and abused.

Re: A message to Ship Shape TV and John G.

I find Norm's fancy tools interesting. I know he can do it without them too. He's a master at his craft and he understands the history of it. The Woodwright's shop is fascinating because he builds everything out of tools that he made himself. The Router Workshop is interesting but they downplay the fact that they use patterns. If you buy a rig like they have, it's still useless without good patterns for which you need to invest in more tools to make properly. The bump on the old guy's head kinda makes him look like that big guy (Sloth) from The Goonies too. They both creep out my wife with their coveralls.

I agree about the shows becoming infomercials. Most of the projects are beyond the reach of most folks. And on those quick makeover shows, they're making something to take a picture of. Not much of that stuff will last.

Ok but what really makes me sick is that guy Ty what's his name. It's like he and his crew get a dollar for every tear they can produce on TV. It's disgusting. Sure, help some folks out, but have some dignity! Geez.

I used to watch a "regular Guy DIY show" - it was called "Home Improvement!"

More Power! AARRRRGGGGGHHHH! LOL! I think they based Tim "the Tool Man" Taylor on me - always trying to get more power and screwing up more things than repairing in the process! HA!

Norm makes nice stuff BUT main stream word working like (Fine Woodwoking) object to a LOT of the way he does things (like the nail guns)

A-Man to the original post!

Mr. "G" is just plain lame..."Shoot, you know the drill." The show panders to the after market crowd and ignores those of us who don't live near, "the beautiful Okechobee waterway...." The show biz writers strike certainly won't impact the drivel that passes for dialog on SSTV.

Get real.... Let "Ship Shape University" develop a course of study on something in which the freshwater 22' and under crowd might enroll.
