Can I cut a hole here?

I'm contemplating putting in an anchor locker. I think I can use a flush mount hatch and either box in the area below or hang a catch net and cut a neat little slot in the hatch cover for the rope to come out. It looks like there is plenty room between the hull, but will the opening compromise it's rigidity? The glass seems really thick in this area I'm guessing at least 1/4" The hatch cover I'm looking at takes an 8"x12" opening just enough to fit the anchor, I'm confident I can do the job but not sure if there's any structual members below that area? All opinions welcome.

You might like to try to put an anchor thru an 8X12 inch hatch. It may not fit, for the size anchor you need.

If you do build the anchor locker, see if you can box it out and install a drain (hole thru the hull high above the waterline, with a clam shell vent over it). it will be very convenient to wash the salt or sand off the anchor line and anchor.
