I have a 14' v-bottom boat with a 20hp Johnson that runs and steers great. We tried a Chrysler 25hp motor on it a few weeks ago. The motor runs great but it pulls so hard to the left (making the boat steer right) that it wears me out after a few minutes. There is no adjustment fin on the lower unit. Suggestions?

It's 1978 model. It looks brand new and I can get for about $350. I believe that there is a tension adjustment but I thought that maybe there might be another solution. Thanks

Sorry, I meant to say the Chrysler is an 1988, at least thats what the guy told me. I'll check to be sure, but it is definitly a 25hp. The Johnson is a 1966 FD 20.

I had accually pretty much talked myself out of it. I've been a J/E person forever but it seemed like good deal. I'm looking for a 1960s Evinrude 18 hp fastwin now. Thanks

Your post about the 25 chrysler is giving me nightmares... please, I beg of you, don't mention a chrysler 25 for 350.00 again.;) I would pay 50 bucks for it just to send it to a watery grave in the nastiest portion of my bayou back home----after I broke it into itty bitty pieces with a sledge hammer. That would be 50 more than it was worth.
I do, however, highly recommend the 18hp you're interested in. I only have 3 of them and love 'em all.

One more time and then we'll let it die. Accually the motor looks like new and runs like a top. If not for the left pull it would probably be on my boat as we speak. Thought I had a fastwin 18 located in KC a couple weeks ago but I turned out to be a 10 hp. I live out in the sticks and there are old boats and motors everywhere. I saw several 50s and early 60s Johnsons and Evinrudes today. Kinda like the old Harley in the barn except most are sitting outside just rotting away.

I saw this one today on ebay and got a good laugh; thought you might, too. It looks like I was wrong on your chrysler---look at how much this guy is wanting for this "jewel"--only 899 bucks (buy it now). HA HA HA!!!!
Not that I want you to get it but---if you're that interested, see if it has a trim tab on the cavitation plate that has a bolt on it. If so, then your problem is the trim tab has turned and moving it back to the correct position by loosening the bolt and making the alignment mark match up, then retightening the bolt would make it steer right. Then again, it may not have a trim tab, I've never taken a close look at a Chrysler. Like Tashasdaddy said, though, I would think it would be tough to get parts for it and I think before very long at all you would definitely need 'em. However, keep in mind that I am beyond "biased". I love OMC's!! Besides, I really don't know too much about Chrysler's other than what I've seen and heard over the years around the lakes and outboard mechanic's shops here. Their Force motors put the icing on the cake for me. Just my inexpert opinion, anyway.
Hope you find a good one,
JBJ

some people don't have a clue what something is worth. maybe he thinks it is a collectors item. 57 and up 15-18 are great, i had 3 50's vintage 15's.

Re: Tiller handle pulls to left

I have a 25 on a 10 foot tunnel hull. It did the same thing. I found that if I cut down the prop by about 1/2 inch diameter and cupped it it became much more tractable with the same speed and WOT RPM. You could also try adding a trim tab under the cavitation plate or putting a wedge on the exhaust snout. (The snout is angled and not adjustable). Or, try finding a different diameter and pitch prop but that will be a chore.

If your engine is in as good a condition as you describe, 350 is a little high but not too bad. If you REALLY like it, I would try bargaining him down a little. Especially since you would need to play with the prop and/or engine. Parts are still available. For example, I needed a piston which was no longer in Merc stock. I was able to find two marinas that had one each--new old stock--cost me a bit more than I wanted to spend though. 100 each plus shipping.

By the way-- it can't be an '88. Chrysler became Force sometime after '84 but before '88.

Re: Tiller handle pulls to left

I'm not going to buy it. Bought a 67 FD21 Johnson parts motor today and some new coils and points for my 66 20hp,so I'm just going to go through it top to bottom. Give me something to do this winter.
