I recently noticed black(or burnt) oil under my 115 merc. It is coming out from between the prop and the housing. A small amount but it is worrying me. Where is it coming from? Can't be LU oil because the leaking oil is BLACK. Any ideas anyone?

2 strokes burn oil with the fuel and is very normal to have some oil by the exhaust. Is it 2 or 4 stroke?

Yes gotta mix the oil n gas. Hope that is what I am seeing. Just now thought about this--I have always had the trim up on the support here at home so I am thinking that since I have let the motor down it shows the oil leak but it won't when it is up. What ya think? Sound right?
Thank you for your response. Both of you .Good talkin with ya.

2 cycle engines are messy.

The more you idle around, or if you have poor compbustion, or just by nature, they will build up unbunt oils and such between the upper engine section, and the propeller. In what might be considered the exhaust pipe section.

After running, and let to sit, these oils will drool down this exhaust pipe area and gather into a goo that will dribble out of the propeller when motor is allowed to sit in the propeller down position.

Now I did not say that you do not have a real oil leak somewhere.

If you are still uncertian have it looked at professionally.

The only other place that would have oils that might leak might be the gear case. If you service that, you will quickly either see it's full of oil, or the oil has been exchanged for water, or some combination there of. Leading to the belief of an actual issue.

Probably the best defense to the drools is a good state of tune followed by good hard extended use.

Probably the most disturbing is to start it on the hose and run at low RPMS in the driveway.

Thanks yepblaze. I have been ruuning at idle on the hose like you guessed. And the compression is 122 lowest is 120. It doesn't have the pazzaz it should. Needs a tune up for sure. You pegged it . Thanx

Have you taken off your prop and looked for fishing line or string lately ? If not I would recommend it and while off take a look at your seal just behind the prop make sure it's not torn or leaking even if you have to wipe it out and let it set for a few days and check it again for oil leaks. As I have found line and string around mine and had to replace a seal in an old 135 inline Merc I had.

I took the prop off ,Paul. No fishing line etc. The seal looks okay. I believe it is oil build up from running it on the hose. I washed the area out. After a couple of days it stopped leaking. Thanks for your input. Donnie
