I bought a used lower end for my 78 70 HP Evinrude and had to alter the shifter and when I went to see how it would work Reverse is Forward and Forward Reverse. Is there one year where the gears are reversed or something? Is there anything I can do?

yep, 73 to 77 are the reverse of 78 and newer. 73 to 77 where shift assist. you would have to change out the complete linkage.

I altered the linkage from the original lower end to match for replacement lower end by cutting to length and re threading, at the risk of a dumb questions, could I still operate the Boat by simply using Reverse as forward, could you achieve full throttle?

i don't think so, different travel of the cable. and it would be extremely dangerous, if someone was not use to it.

You can't simply alter the existing linkage - gotta use the linkage off a motor that matches the unit. Find a junker/clunker with the correct linkage and swap it out...

The linkage that came with the lower end would not fit properly with the motor (top end), are you suggesting changing more than the shifter shaft that goes into the lower end or changing parts out at top end. I noticed the shifter shaft that threads at bottom end does not go deep into lower end as does the original.Never did look into what was down there. Is this what your referring to as Linkage? Is it much to change what your referring to?

it will require change all the linkage to what the donor motor had. top and bottom.

Re: Changed Lower End Reverse is Forward

I'm wondering if buying another lower end may be easier and selling the incorrect one I have on the boat now. Is this lower end less valuable then the one I require, is that why I purchased it cheaper than others I had seen? I have to decide where to go from here with as little expense as possible.
Thanks

Im sure if you kept your eyes open on the online classifieds such as ebay, craigslist,etc... you could find a good used linkage, then sell the one that you have, leaving little expense on your part.

Re: Changed Lower End Reverse is Forward

The shift rod coming out of the unit is fine and needs to stay in place. The parts in question are the main shift bellcrank arm under the carburetors and the shift bellcrank bolted on the side of the block (nested with the throttle linkage bellcrank), plus all the related, attached connection arms and linkages. I swapped one of these a few years ago and it worked fine... It did require removing the powerhead, though, as the bellcrank under the carbs wouldn't come out without it... Not a difficult job - took about 2 hours.

Thanks,
As my name states not sure I can tackle the task, may look for help. What do I look for as I search for used parts required?
