Any suggestions on what makes a good boat list. Dry boat weight si 4300, so we need at least a 6000 lb lift.

Any significant improvements in past few years that would make it worth it to buy new?

i just had to take my boat off the davits i noticed a small crack on the lifting eye on the transom . i am planning on replacing davits with a lift that holds the boat just like if you had it on a boat trailer...

You should look at a product called Air Dock, it uses large inflatable bags to lift the boat out of the water. It spreads the load out over the entire hull, which is a problem I see with a lot of lifts is they do not support the hull evenly. I think they are pretty reasonable compared to a regular type of lift.

I purchased one new (5600lbs) 2years ago and one used (1800lbs) this year. Both are Hewitts. If you get a used one, I would replaced or at least inspect, all the hardware and cables (if equip). It is easiler to do on land then in the water.

Just be careful of which brand you buy.
There is at least one company that grossly over rates the lift capacity of their lifts.
i.e. they place too much weight on the cable(s) against common industry standards for wire rope/cable cable working load limits.

I would recommend an aluminium one. They can last a lifetime and has a good resale value. I just ordered one which lifts with hydraulics using cooking oil. The pump is powered by a 12 volt battery with a solar panel. They can customize these things to 30,000lbs if not more. The brand is Bertand Docks but I think they only sell them in Ontario and Quebec. I have seen similar hydro-lifts in the states tho.

You don't want the one PhatboyC posted for use in saltwater.

Too much mechanisim in the water.
Barnacles will jam it up pretty quickly.
Would be okay for freshwater as about the only growth will be algae.

Thanks. Any thoughts about some of the common brands? Locally, we have Hewitts, Shorestation, Floe, Shore Tracker. Any favorites among these? We are thinking a hydraulic 6000 lb.;)
