Looking at a boat with a 1977 Mercury 150. What can you tell me about the durability and performance of the outboard?

With normal care they were good motors after all it wouldn't be around after 30 years if it was not. They were alittle thirsty but when they were built fuel price wasn't a problem.

Hi... I've got a 1991 mercury 150 ha blackmax......

let me tell you, we've been out on sunday (my friends got a 16ft rubber duck with a 75 ha mercury)

we played for about 4 hours on the river, (being my first time with this boat i did all kind of fun stuff with it)

when i switch from one tank to the other i've used 5 liters more than he did, with his 75 ha in 4 hours and he was just cruising.

with all that power on the 150 ha, i'm happy to pay the extra fuel

Re: 1977 Mercury 150HP

I owned a '77 Merc 1500 for 20+ years. Since they are only 99 CU IN in displacement, they qualify as a high performance motor (IMHO). They are a bit finicky, and need to be tuned closely to put out the power. Most of their power comes in the midrange and top end. They have less low end power than expected, especially if propped for speed.

However, if you need a lightweight, powerful motor for cruising at 2/3 throttle, I do not think they can be beat.

My only concern for you is that it may be difficult to find anyone to fix this motor, due to it's age. If you can do your own work, great. If not, you might like to pass on it.

That's exactly what I was looking for!! I do my own work but really was looking for something that would be fairly trouble free, like my 1996 Evinrude 130hp. I'll pass on this one. Thanks.
