Re: Looking To Buy A Boat.

there are many great bowriders in the 20 ft range. evinrude etec or yamaha 4 stroke, is my recommendation. go with the max Hp the boat is rated for. we never here any complaints about too much HP. just too little. and you don't have to use it all, but have it when needed.

Re: Looking To Buy A Boat.

If I went with outboard, would I still be able to control the boat with a wheel?

Cause I am thinking of the fishing/bass boats where you control the boat with the engine in the back.

I think I may want outboard, since I could work on the engine if needed.

I'll do my research. Are there any other things I should narrow down as well?

Thanks.

I lean towards outboards. They leave you wiht more space in the boat, they tend to be easier to mantain, especially when the time for winterizing comes. Good luck.

Re: Looking To Buy A Boat.

The simple fishing boats with tiller are usually small, with motor well under 100 HP. If you want to run a big motor, or even a small motor at a good clip, then the wheel steering is WELL worth while. My 60 HP bass boat had a steering wheel, and I wouldn't want it any other way.

"I think I may want outboard, since I could work on the engine if needed."

That will put you into a used boat, with the old carb style motor. The newer OB designs are not all that simple or easy to learn. Buying a brand new OB boat with carb motor can be done, but I would not recommend it.

Re: Looking To Buy A Boat.

there are outboards that mount on the transom of the boat,

there are inboard/outboards that the engine is inside the stern, with an outdrive attached thru the transom.

there are inboards where the engine and tranmission are inside, and the drive shaft goes thru the bottom of the boat, to the prop under the boat.

you seem very confused, i suggest some good magazine reading, and a couple of boat shows, to educate your self.

Yeah.
I am a little confused at the moment. I use to know general knowledge about boating. I'll read some material then come back and start looking.

Thanks.

Let me see if I can really confuse things. If you want alot of room, a fishing package, and an open bow, why not a deck boat?? I have a 21' LARSON 204 Escape. Mine however is a I/O drive. But you can go to the LARSON web site, and watch about a 5 minute video, and see what you think. They are also, made in an outboard unit.

(Just a suggestion)

You can go to www.larsonboatsvideo.com and see a couple of different videos.

Hmm.
They look identical. I am still pretty set on a 20' bowrider with a wakeboard tower.

Thanks for the suggestion though.

I am still open to the deckboat though.

Since its my first boat, I'd want to buy cheap, but still in good condition and stuff.

Thanks.

Re: Looking To Buy A Boat.

if you want a wakeboard boat, they are a different animal. they have built in ballast tanks, that fill with water, so the boat will throw a bigger wake, for the board.

boat show is a great place to start, also go online and request brochures from the manufacturer. frequent the boat ramps and see what's being used in your area. talk to the people, ask about there boats, always start with a complement.

cheap boats? i don't think there is any. maybe a 14' fishing boat with some oars maybe. boats ain't cheap. ya can either pay now or pay later. now is for a nice serviceable ready to run boat. later is one that may need much work. then you'll get your education on boat maint your wondering about.

the us power squadron has classes that cover boat maint. it's even called boat maint. the hitch is ya have to take the classes in sequence prior to being able to take the maint. class. which aint all bad. it educates ya on boats in general. then leads ya into the maint. of them.

ya might get a book called chapmans piloting, seamanship and boat handleing. it has much info in it.....a very worthwhile book....... maybe a liabray would even have a copy on hand....

i found my used boat here on iboats classifieds.......check them out. many different types of boats to look and drool over........

I know boats aren't cheap. But, what I meant to say was, I dont want to start off with like a 2008 bowrider or something.

Check the classifieds here, but also try boat trader online, sorrry dont know how to put a link, they are really easy to search by boat type, price and geographic area. when io was looking last year found a lot on there until the wife said she wanted a new boat, dmmn the bad luck:)

As you are new to boating I would recommend an outboard just for the fact you can see which way it is pointed before hitting the throttle, may sound funny to some, but as someone who drives ships for a living, Ive gottten in some almost embarrassing situations by losing track of the rudder!
