Have a 1988 evinrude 70 vro that when put in reverse and reved up will jump up like it is trying to jump out of gear and the gear shifter crunches some and moves like it is trying to shift out of gear. This only happens in the water. On the trailer it runs in reverse reved up fine. Foward gear works fine. I am thinking it could be a clutch dog in the gear case going out but would appreciate any input or thoughts.
Thanks

Check your shift cable adjustment and travel before you condemn the lower unit. Cables have been known to stretch or come loose.

find out what's wrong, before you kill the clutch dog. my bet is on bad cable. it's 20 years old. disconnect at engine, and shift manually at engine.
