A picture is worth a thousand words, but I suspect you have 1 marine and 1 automotive pump. The 3rd hole you refer to is for a drain to the carb. If the diaphram leaks then the fuel goes up a length of Tygon tube to the carb throat, floods the engine and stops it. This stops the pump filling the sump with fuel and turning your boat into an ICBM!

Cheers,

Chris..........

both my (72 & 75) fuel pumps are carters w/o any sight tube. if they leak, guess i blow up. :(. in service manual #3 i see they talk about the carter fuel pump having a sight tube..... they also start talking about low and high volume pumps...... the low vol. one looks like this but apperently has provisions for the sight tube. least thats the way i'm gettin it....

this is the one off my 72, the 75 looks exactly the same.....

looks like that pump only has inlet and outlet like one of the ones i have the other one has a third threaded hole just above were your fingers are on the cone or angled area of the housing your holding in the pic.

That's where the fitting for the discharge hose (runs up to the carb) goes. That's the one (the only one!) to use. And make sure that hose is fitted.

You could add an additive if you wish,.......
But,.......
The odds are,... You'll never put enough hours on it to devolop sunken Valves......

Personally,........... I wouldn't worry about it.....................;)

When you recon the engine have hardened valve seats fitted. Retard the timing a couple of degrees - you're done!

for ziggy
Look closer and check for a vent hole(automotive) marine use (threaded). It`s needed to allow the diaphram to operate properly.Plugged off the diaphran won`t pump fuel. Without the hose to the carb you have a bomb instead of a boat. You would never know the diaphram has ruptured and it dumping fuel into the bilge.

Re: 165 L6 250 fuel pump?

sure am glad i read iboats...... this thread has cleared up what i'm supposed to have as far as a fuel pump goes. i do not believe i have what i need, but need to look at the aristocraft. i have been concered about my fuel pump before here on iboats too but i've never understood what it is supposed to be like. now i do. thanks to all info in this thread....

interesting i'd aquire two different boats that, certainly one and most likely two have this safety item removed.........

special thanks to bt doctur.

knowing about the vent hole was a missing piece of info i didn't have along with bg's three hole carter fuel pump that looks just like mine..... no bomb next year........thanks. i know what i need to do......ziggy

No one said this, but I believe the 2.5 and 3.0 engines use the same fuel pump. Unless the 250ci engines have a higher output pump, which I find unlikely.

Yep... all 120/140/160/165 fuel pumps supersede to -86234A4. It's even the same one used on Bond-o's favourite engine, the 470!:D:D
