Sight unseen I have apparently purchased a 58 18hp evinrude (15024). The weather here has gone to hell and prevented me from seeing it in person. My fishing buddie just called me and assured me it was in good shape. Motor, 2 pressurized tanks for $100. And as an added bonus, for an additional $50, I get a 54 15hp Fastwin (15012) . One question, he said that the 58 was a long shaft but I don't think they had but one length in 58. He was comparing the 58 to the 54, which I think would be shorter. Would this be correct?

Great deal. Could be a long shaft.

The 58 Johnson catalog refers to a 5" long shaft for an extra charge. The Evinrude catalog dosn't. I won't see them until Monday, so we'll see what kinda shape they are acually in.

I'm assuming that a Johnson FD is a standard shaft and a FDL is a long shaft. So an Evinrude 15024 is a standard shaft and a 15025 would be a long shaft.

Long shaft is obvious as the 5 inch extension is clearly visable.

I'm just speculating. We are in an ice storm right now so it will be a few days before I see them. I know what the extensions look like.

--I don't believe you, post pics and quit whining about the ice storm. Any self-respecting idiot like myself would go out in that stuff to get a "new" motor!
When we got sleet or ice back in the good 'ol days I would always like to hear this quote---"It's not dangerous, I've got a 4-wheel drive". Ha Ha! Since we only got cold weather about once a year and noone was accustomed to driving in it, it was real entertainment to stand at a safe distance at certain intersections in town and watch the "Show" as these experts in their 4-wheel drives commenced to ruining sheet metal.:p
I want to see that darned motor! In particular the '54 15hp.
Later,
JBJ

So far we dodged the bullit. It stayed just above freezing all night. The 58 looks like it has been taken care of. The 54 doesn't look too bad either except for the lousy repaint. I'll post some pictures tonight.

That's good news. I love the 15 hp's. I have 5 or so 1953-54 Fastwins. I may have the parts manual for your Fastwin in pdf format. PM me your email address and I'll send it out to you. Look forward to the pics.

Said this before but here it is again.

When I was in my teens I bought a new '58 rude for $400 cash from C.B Delhomme (dealer) in Houston, TX. which I worked for at 50 cents an hour. I kept it (less fuel tank) in my room. Mother was very understanding. I thought that engine was the prettiest thing I had ever seen.

Forgot. It was the 18hp also and after running daddy's 10 hp it was quite an upgrade.

Manual sent.

They look like good candidates for restoration. Too bad you are missing the front plastic badge on the 1958. That will be a hard piece to replace.
