I have a 2000 130hp Johnson. I can put in at the boat ramp to run about a mile or so my fishing whole and it will run like crap on top end. It will bog at anything over 4200 RPMs. You can pump the primer ball up and it will run good as long as you keep pumping it. I check the fuel pump by turning the motor over, there was plenty of fuel pumping out of the lines. What could be my problem? Thanks! ;)

Sounds like a bad fuel pump, but let's be sure... Get a vacuum gauge and a piece of 3/8" clear hose. Rig the vacuum gauge and clear hose between the engine and primer bulb. Run the engine in the lake in gear up to full throttle and watch the gauge and clear hose. Any vacuum over 4" means a fuel restriction in the fuel system, any less than 2" means a leak and air bubbles in the clear hose means a leak. If this all checks out good, there are tests to check the pump. You should get a service manual for it.

I don't mean to be rude, but get a manual, explaining it is long and drawn out. You have a VRO system on there that takes different dianosis than a regular fuel pump. One of the first things to check for is a clogged pulse limiter which is the fitting that screws into the side of the block hooked to the pulse hose comming from the VRO pump. Also, check the hose itself for splits or cracks.

OK. Yeah the thing that confused me the most was that coming back in, it would be fine. I thought if it was a bad fuel pump then it would do it all the time. Ok I am about to look at the book I have for my motor.

FYI -- it isn't a VRO system. To avoid confusion don't refer to it as a VRO, it may lead to getting wrong parts etc. It's actually an OMS pump that pumps a basically straight 50:1 mix. The pumps look similar but are different.

You are right, just used VRO, because that is a better known name for the pumps. I have heard many call the OMS a VRO on many occasions....just guess it's a stereotype.

Ok it mixes the oil and gas together. After I put the new powerhead on, I started mixing the oil my self. So its not a VRO.

Ahhhhh.... describe what you did to go premix.... this could be the vital key here.....

Ahhhh and the plot thickens..... the oil pump and the fuel pump are one in the same....was it replaced?

Well, if the pump caused a $3,000 failure, I'd replace it. And an airleak on the oil side of the pump can cause catastrophic failure. Even if you cap off the oil side, there will still be an air leak causing starvation and detonation.

Ok I will do that tomorrow. Another question for you, my motor has four carbs. Is there a order you have to adjust them in? And what is the idle RPM? Thanks

There is a link and sync adjustment you have to do, an idle timing adjustment and a final idle needle adjustment. I usually start from the top and work down and do it a few times. Consult your manual for details.

OK. If I adjust the motor at my house just off of a water hose, do I have to allow like a little higher idle rpm just because its not in the water?

Ok I will do. Did you say you didn't know the idle RPM for that?

The book says it.... 650 - 750 in gear free boat (not tied to the dock)
