1972 carvelle-overheating problem

hello everyone. i have a 1972 carvelle with a 165 hp inline 6. i took it to the lake for the first time in 5 years. it ran ok for about 2 minutes before it started overheating and started to smoke. does anyone have a clue in what might be wrong? thanks

The FIRST thing you check on any overheat on a marine engiine is the raw water pump impeller. They are a maintenance item that needs replaced frequently. Most people never replace them till they fail and cause an overheat.
As far as where your's is, what is it. OMC, Mercruiser??????
Doesn't even matter what type boat it is.

Agreed.... whether its a Merc or an OMC, the impeller is going to be in the drive. The OMC is more of a pain than the Merc, and there are some different things to watch out for as you do the job.

If that thing has been sitting for 5 years...... you may want to do other things before you put it back in the water. Carb, tune-up, belts and hoses to name a few.
