My nieghbor has a 305 with a 4 bl rochester q jet and his engine is getting spark but not starting ... we pulled his carb out and there is a pool of gas in the intake... about 5 in long on each side of the intake... carb rebuild time? he is 55 and doesnt use a comp so I am posting this for him... He wants to know if q jets do this alot and should he just buy a new carb instead of rebuilding this on

The Q-Jets sometime leak out of the bottom of the bowl, but that is not necessarily the proble. The engine may just simply be flooding. Check the plugs and do a compression test to start. Next, check the choke setting. The flaot needle and seat could be failing to seatand causing fuel to overflow into the intake. Another possibility is the fuel pump. there is a small 1/4" hose that goes from the pump to the carb. This hose transfers fuel from the pump to the carb if the diapragm in the pump gets a hole in it. chek the hose for fuel...if there is any fuel there, he needs a pump.

When it floods, if you open the throttle wide open and try to start, it should clear the gas and start.
Be ready to pull the throttle back quickly.
Perhaps he pumped it to much or the choke is sticking.
Might be worth replacing it and see if you can start it and examine what is happening.

All of the above is good and certainly true... but I suspect the plug at the bottom of the bowl is leaking - as flabum points out. It needs to be epoxied.
