68 sea ray.

in the bilge and on the transom (inside) it is covered with a waxy black coating. looks like a fiberglass/wax mix.
or an early version of rhino lining!

thanks

Re: whats that black stuff???

no
this is a factory applied (i think) waxy kind of stuff.
i think it was used to protect the bilge from water.
it makes a vary good barrier between the bilge water and the fiberglass.
it hasent changed in the 8 years i owned the boat.
the reason im asking is cause its such a good product i want to cover the entire inner hull with it.
could this be just a very waxy type of resin?
thanks

Re: whats that black stuff???

that stuff is tough.
pulled part of the floor tonight.
found a definite line where it was sprayed on.
put a crow bar against it to pull parts of the floor, it barly moved.
after some of the floor was gone i was able to get a crowbar under the glass in the bilge. (under the glass with the black stuff)
started prying and the whole bilge moved. but the glass with the black stuff stayed mostly in shape! just a little warping! i could hear the glass tearing away from the plywood and the hull! but the shape of the bilge mostly stayed!
looks like im gonna hafta grind the stuff out.

the boat has been done before. someone just "married" a new set of stringers to the old. cut out the rot and didnt even glass them in!

and worst of all they didnt even put in foam! my core samples were air!

thats a testomony to sea ray.
ive had the boat for 8 years at least. and the stringers were soft! i took that boat out in the biggest storms this lake could throw at it and there wasent a problem!

any how, as far as the black stuff is concerned ill post pics as soon as i can find out how to!

any help would be appreciated.
thanks

Re: whats that black stuff???

could be undercoating, that they used on cars to keep the underside from rusting out. there use to be several brands that you could do yourself, and then there were companies like the truck liner companies. can't remember the names. they were big back in that era.

like this: "http://www.duplicolor.com/products/undercoating.html"

Did you ever recieve an email back from Sea ray re: the black stuff? My 1976 srv 200 has the exact same coating on the transom and bilge and also in the cuddy around the flush head.
