I'm about to give Bob, my Bud with the 50' Scarab a hand finishing up the motor installs, All 3 of them....

We've got the 2 outside motors going in Just Fine,......

The dilemma is with the center motor,...
I'm well aware that the drive,+ driven Flanges must be Perfectly Square/ Plumb/ Parallel,........
If I could find a copy of "Driveshaft Extension Models
If your power package is equipped with a driveshaft extension, refer to the Driveshaft Extension
Installation Instructions
(90-862858) included with your engine package."
I'm sure that my Questions would be Answered,.......

We'll be using an Angle Level to find the #s,......
But I sure would like to find a copy of Mercruiser's #90-862858.......

Anybody know where I could get a Look at this publication,..??..??.......

Not exactly, they need to be offset a little as I recall. Let me look around and I'll see if I can't find some info for you.

PS: What year and size engines and drives are we looking at?

Well, I found you Old Thread about that boat, found out what engine, and figured the years from there. Couldn't come up with that publication you wanted, but you can go to the Merc manual site and download #23. Section 2B covers everything you need.

Ayuh,.......... You're The Man, Don,...........

I downloaded a few different "Install" manuals earlier today, Looking for That particular section........
Obviously, I didn't find it, hence the thread......

Ayuh,....... That's what I'm looking for, Haven't switched windows,+ read it yet,..........
But 0? to 3? comes to mind,.....( ;) I love being able to put the Degree mark there, Thanks again;) )
Bob's Guru in Syracuse was telling him they need to be Dead Straight,.......
That's Why I want the factory documentation........

Anyways,..........
I Know there has to be an Off-set, But the flanges Still need to be Absolutely Parallel I believe,.......
Gotta go do some Read'n,...... Thanks Don....................:)

I also have a publication #90-866235 in PDF format. It's a 2005 edition not sure if it has more information in it than the manual or not. If you want it, I can email it to you, it's 2mb so not real big. (PM me your email address if you want that publication)
you do save those downloads to your computer don't you? So you don't have to redownload each time?

Just put them on a regular CD-R or CD-RW, no need for a DVD not sure it would work anyway on a DVD.

Ya got mail

Re: Engine Alignment Question, with a driveshaft

Hi Don,....

Ayuh,.....
I've been reading everything I got from you,... The emailed Info was pretty much a copy of the manual chapter you pointed out eariler....
I printed about a dozen pages so Bob,+ I can go over them together,....
It's all pretty much what I was expecting,...
Bob has to spend atleast 1 day a week with the Wife,+ infant Daughter,.....
And I'm supposed to be showing 1 of the riverhouses to a couple of potential Tenants Today(If the *%#&s ever Call)......
Sooo,...... It looks like Tomorrow will be spent in the bilge of the Cigarboat(Too danm Big to call a cigarette boat)........

The Main Issue that has Me just alittle Nervous is the fact that being a sorta Offshore Racer type boat,.....
The Motor mounts with Plates,....... No Adjustments Possible.........
Once we drill the Holes,......... That's It, the motor will Have to live there......
That's Why We're trying to be meticulous about this install......
Bob picked up a digital Level last night,+ I'm grabbing my Best tape measure,+ Reading Glasses............

As Usual,.... You've been a real Time Saver for me,..... Thanks once again,.....

I'll be Sure to post tomorrow night or monday on just How it goes............;)

Re: Engine Alignment Question, with a driveshaft

Sounds to me like he needs to get the right kind of motor mounts. So they are adjustable. No matter what you do in the shop, once it gets put in the water it's going to settle and need some realignment. That is just typical of all big boats. Or you will get vibration at higher rpms, and I know that boat isn't going to just idle around.

Ayuh,..... I Agree,....

But, This is the system Wellcraft put into it,... Offshore Racing Mounts......
and I know that boat isn't going to just idle around.

I wouldn't be so Sure of that,.......
Bob's Not a rich man,+ putting Fuel into Triple 7.4MPIs isn't Cheap at high rpms........

I'm thinking it's going to be the 1000 Islands Hotboat Society's Dock Queen...........:D

Re: Engine Alignment Question, with a driveshaft

Since he is putting only 7.4MPI's in it, the driveshaft alignment isn't as critcal as if you were to install 800's or something in it. The solid motor mounts not only keep the motors in place, but also stiffen up the hull back there. There will be almost zero change from settling once it's in the water.

Re: Engine Alignment Question, with a driveshaft

Ayuh,..........

We didn't get to planting motor #2 today,...........
The Weather is alittle Nasty up here right now,........
Bob lives down in the middle of the "Snow Belt",+ wanted be be Home by dark,.......
Can't blame him for that,........ Tomorrow is another day......

Motors #1,+ #3 are Very Happily residing in their new Homes though,........

We did go over what needs to be done to get #2 situated,+ So Far,...
It looks like the pieces are falling together Right.......;)

Kewl. I like the quote: "Notice how the engine room gets So much Smaller with all 3 motors."

There's still a whole lot more open area there than my single 5.7L crammed into my 8' beam boat.

Ayuh,.........

That "Engine Room" is Bigger than most of the Boats owned by Most of the Posters here at iboats,.........

It'll be a few more months,.... But,..
I'll try to post a picture of it After the Generator, Batteries, Water Heater, Lifts, etc. are mounted,...
I dare Guess that only on motor #2 could you change the sparkplugs without removing abunch of Stuff to get at them,......
And,......
#2 is going to be Iffy...................

Re: Engine Alignment Question, with a driveshaft

good luck bondo.

triples are way over my head, so im gonna sit back,,,learn,,,and offer moral support.

if your bud isnt a rich man he will be after he sells that one. at least a down payment on a rental property. (he stands to make about a hunderd grand with the price he paid for the hull and trlr)
cant wait to hear the results, im guessing 85-95 mph@ a thousand gallons per hour?

oops

Ayuh,......
According to Bob,...
He talked to the guy who was the Lead Man in the Wellcraft 50' Scarab devolopment,+ production........
He told Bob that with the configuration he's putting in,....
He'll see the low-70s, at about 8/10thsmile per gallon...............
Bob says if he can get it onto plane,+ to the beach,+ back for less than a $100.....
He figures he can take it to the beach atleast a couple times a season..........

Like I said earlier,..... It's going to be a "Dock Queen",......
He's got 1 of those twin engine Sea-Doos for getting around,......Rather Quickly at that....
