Came in yesterday afternoon and when I pulled to the dock, I could hear something on the motor running like the starter or something like that. The started has got stuck 2 times out of 40 trips.

I unplugged negative battery post and it stopped. When I put the negative post back on battery, the starter engaged. Is this a Solenoid problem?

Thanks

either solenoid or wiring shorted out. reconnect battery, unplug the big red plug and see if it still does it.

if it stops, there is a problem either in the wiring harness or ignition switch.

it it continues it is the solenoid.

hello,

solenoid contacts can over time weld together under certain conditions. if it were mine, i would also service, clean etc starter since it may have been running along with engine for some time.

let us know what u learned. :)

thanks.

As an added note...... Solenoids fail and stick due to being used with a low charged or failing battery. The low voltage causes a slow engagement of the inner plunger and the resulting arcing results in (as mentioned above) a welding condition of the contact area.

Even if one has a top notch battery in a fully charged condition state, if any cable terminal associated with the starter system are loose, tight but dirty, or a cable is failing internally due to corrosion etc, A voltage drop will most likely exist.

I added the excellent rating to this thread ONLY because of Joe Reeves' usual excellent contribution.
