i'm gettin ready to put my drive gear and brg. assy. back into my 1 drive. assuming i get it back in the hole. think i read that i'm supposed to use perfect seal on the retainer nut. then i read in manual #6 that ya are supposed to use this quicksilver special lubricant 101. i did replace my brg. set. so will be in need of shiming. probably gonna have to take it apart again. so.
do i use any sealer or anything on the retainer nut the 1st install. i'm concerned about torqueing it dry vs. with the perfect seal or 101..... any recomendations?

what is quicksilver special lubricant 101. anything i can sub for it if thats what i'm supposed to use?

Special Lubricant 101 is a fancy name for water proof grease. 2-4-C will work if you have it. The perfect seal keeps the threads from corroding, those threads don't seal anything, and any grease will work. It just to lube the threads.

Re: quicksilver special lubricant 101

thanks dons, i got perfect seal and 2-4-c......and polaris pwc waterproof grease.... i use that on my propshaft.....anyways....

so either or is ok it sounds like. guess i'll go for the 2-4-c......... don't sound like it has much effect on the torque then......

brg. assy. is slid in. went in smooth as ice.....hash marks lined up....so far so good....starting with .037" shims. took out .038......

any good suggestions for a way to load it up in a vise so i can get me some serious torque on the retainer nut?

Lay it on the ground (on top of some carpet or cardboard) and enlist your neighbor or friend to stand on the lower as you torque it.

Actually, the grease does affect the final torque, you will get more compression with a well lubed set of threads over dry threads.

thanks flabum. actually, that's how i got it loose to start with. was probably my 1st thought too as a way to get it back together. glad to hear that has worked..... probably gonna be the way i try it first. see what happens....

that's exactly why i'm asking the question about the lub or perfect seal.... i'm wondering if that compression effects the shiming process......

The compression won't affect the shimming. Shims don't compress.

When i said "compression" I meant compression force. With a lubed fastener, the compression force will be greater than with dry threads because dry threads give more friction that rob from the torque applied. This is usually more important in certain gasket applications such as head gaskets.
