Outdrive swap omc to merc. ?

I have a chance to buy this 1972 SS 235 slickcraft with e-z load trl. new bimini full encloser and side curtains for 4-600.00. the motor is stuck and it has an omc i think or a volvo. If convert it to a mercruiser would the transom hole be the same larger or smaller?

You might want to find out EXACTLY what you have there.
To go to a Mercruiser from an OMC, you would have to upgrade, to change to a Mercruiser from a Volvo, you would be doing a downgrade.

Either way, you would have to put in a new transom and cut the hole out (In exactly the right location) to go to a Mercruiser.

I believe it's original equiped from 1972. You think that if it's a volvo i should use it? If it's an OMC i should can it? I wasn't sure which outdrive setup was better. So the transom holes are different for all three? And their in different locations?

Yes, they are all 3 completely different companies, with different ideas and nothing is the same. Except they all did use some GM engines.

Thanks don I just called the owner and it's an OMC eeks! Oh well i like the boat anyway they give a hell of a ride i use to own the same one in the 80s. Maybe i can find a similar Boat with a good drivetrain and swap it over. It's going to be another project lined up behind the SS 215 L6 i'm working on now. With Mercruiser being the dominant force in this area, the other manufacturers, in an attempt to gain market share, made their transom cutouts the same as the Mercruiser. Gave people the easy option of downgrading to OMC Cobra or the later Volvo's (SX I think). But it also works the other way , disgruntled OMC and Volvo owners can upgrade to the superior Mercruiser with ease.

If yours is 1972, then the transom cutout is not the same, OMC or Volvo. Mercruiser do an adaptor for the Volvo cutout. I had the part number a while ago and posted it here... Should be able to find it on a search. Someone called me an idiot until I posted the part number. Boy, did they have egg on their face

HA HA Guess you weren't the idiot after all. Do you know if they made an adapter for OMC as well or was OMC and Volvo cutouts the same in 72? Thankc Achris have a great holiday.

Nope,.....

The Adapter Plate fits the Volvo cut-out perfectly,+ can be made to fit a Merc. TRS cut-out......
They're still available today at Only $everal Hundred $. each.......
But,.......
The OMC cut-out is Much Larger,+ has to be Glued in with plywood......

Mercruiser and Volvo are good choices to go to. The Volvo drive is superior to the Merc Alpha drive. So, if you have a choice between those two, I'd go with the Volvo.
