I've had good luck with Whirlpool over the years, used to be RCA till GE bought them out, but I still think they're better. Sears carries their own version of clones, of the Whirlpool appliances, plus their clones of other brands also.

Re: Best kitchen appliances

You'd be well advised to go to a library and check out Consumer Reports evaluations. Several times a year they report testing of various appliances and brands. I've noticed that brands that tested very well one year may not do so well the next -- I don't know whether that's due to manufacturer's cheapening them or the competition getting better.

Also realize that every manufacturer makes at least 3 quality grades, usually more. So a GE (for example) may be top, bottom, or middle of the pack depending on the model.

That said, I'd stay away from Amana and Maytag -- they used to be excellent, but will be phased out since they were bought by Whirlpool and shut down their central Iowa plants.

Likewise, for years Electrolux manufactured refrigerators in Greenville, Michigan for several brand labels. That plant was shut down in the past year or two, and manufacturing moved to Mexico -- no skilled workers moved, so those same products are now being manufactured by people without experience. Same could be said for many brands, I guess.

Can't remember the brand but folks on another forum were raving about a fridge where the freezer pulled out like a drawer (Amana maybe?)

We have a Whirlpool dishwasher and a Sears refrigerator. Both work just fine and not too expensive.

Consumer reports has rated Whirlpool highly for a number of years, I use that also.

I like Maytag and Whirlpool. I've had problems in the past with Frigidaire so I stay away from them.

Re: Best kitchen appliances

We replaced our dishwasher this year with a GE because the old one had developed a leak that I couldn't fix or even figure out, not sure what brand the old one was.

Hauled off the old one and put the new GE one in and ran a load, and out poured the water again! GAAH!

Spent about 3 days working on it trying to figure out what was causing it, since it never seemed to happen when I had the thing pulled out to get a good look at it. Eventually figured out that I was pushing it too far in and the door was getting caught on the cabinet and not making a seal. Couple shims later and it hasn't leaked since. I would be mad that we spent the money on it, but it does a heck of a better job cleaning the dishes than the other one did, plus the new one is stainless steel so it helps to modernize the kitchen.

Re: Best kitchen appliances

besides owning my own furniture and appliance store, one of the many hats that i wear is that of an appliance tech.

whirlpool.
exellent mid grade appliance.
sears kenmore, the name that has been trusted for years, was all whirlpool stuff.
at least till they started playing with ge and frigidare and went down hill.

for the fridge, dont buy anything with a computerized defrost timer, its junk and expencive to fix. just get the features you want without an electronic timer. the standard defrost timer has worked forever and they are cheep to replace.
if your selling the house, go stainless, if your keeping it (the house) go white.
stainless is a fad. white has been around forever, and will continue forever.

the dishwasher...whirlpool
its a lot more complicated, as before dont get a computerized timer, the old dial type is the way to go, but you do want at least, a true 3 level wash.
and get one with an impeller in it, (grinds up hardened food) that will save your pump. the motor and pump are one, so if one goes.....

if you start thinking washer and dryer....stay far away from the front loads.
your wife will want one, but they are total junk.
the people that have bought front loads are allready replacing front loads with conventionals. and thats the latest from the sears pro installers!
if you want to know more bout that or why, i can let you know.

your wife is the one that will tell you what she wants, and if she doesnt get the ones she wants, yer toast! but just like you need certain tools at your job, like a grinder or hammer, appliances are her tools. get her what she wants but try to keep thoes guide lines in mind.

lastly, buy from a major dealer who does repairs, and buy the extended warranty. and keep buying it. appliances only last 5 years now. not 20 or thirty like they used to.
that extended warranty will save you if you ever need it.
good luck and happy appliance shopping

cheers

Re: Best kitchen appliances

Thanks for the input guys. We subscribed to Consumer reports on line last night and have been reading the reviews. It seems that the reader reviews about dishwashers complain mostly about " bad rinsing and water spots" could this be a product of the water supply or is it really about the dishwasher?

OOPS Thanks for the heads up on the timer and electronic control situation

Thanks Bruce

OOPS pretty much says it all, like it is! With just one personal note of advice Dishwashers are tricky to pick, they have the "contractors special" that comes with new houses (stay away) it is a cheap, noisy, single stage washer (poor washing), that you won't be happy with. Best bet is to get a multistage wash, 2 stage, or 3 stage, that is also designed to be quiet (because they all make some noise), I found this out the hard way.

Whatever you buy look at the energy ratings and try to buy one that uses less electricity. Power is still cheap for now but, with fuel prices going up the price of electricity could start to go up in the future. They have some nice Energy Star models now and sometimes you can get a discount from your electric company to offset the price of a energy star model.

As far as clothes washers I know the front load Maytags were junk. That is one of he reasons the company failed. But, I have friends who are older and love there Whirlpool front load. It uses less water and detergent and gets the clothes very clean. They have had it for 4 years and no problems so far. We live in framing country and get much dirtier then city folk.

My 1976 Frigidaire fridge and the Roper electric range I bought on a auction for 7 dollars both work well.lol

Re: Best kitchen appliances

Don't buy the base model dishwasher. Choose the next model up. The dishwasher is the noisiest appliance in your kitchen and you will appreciate the quieter machine. At our home in California we choose the dishwasher upgrade and it was noticably quieter than our neighbors we selected the base mode.

Re: Best kitchen appliances

hey newport !
if ya think the wifes gonna stop at a fridge and dishwasher.....
heh heh heh....wait till she sees that matching stove and over the oven microwave... or a kitchen island with built in dual wall ovens.....heh heh heh. how much room u got left on the visa???

and yeah, kitchen aid, is a great whirlpool based product, roper is a very base line whirlpool product. maytage was bought by whirlpool a few months ago but untill they get hold of that runnaway train stay away from them.
the dishwasher must be ...SILENT...

and sub-zero... yup the best.. just one appliance will cost you a big part of the whole kitchen renovation budget

cheers and take pics!
