While I'm waiting to recheck the 5.0 engine I may use, I figured I should work on my outdrive. It's a Mercruiser Type I from a 1980 350 Mercruiser setup with 1.5 ratio. I know from my previous question and replies that it will work in my "new" 1986 SunRunner with a 5.0 engine. Where will I find the serial number on the outdrive? I have an old parts booklet for the drive which lists it as "4898730 and up". I would like to find the exact serial #.

Try the old rubbing trick. Put a sheet of paper over where the numbers should be and use the side of a lead pencil to lightly rub the paper. Even if the numbers are painted over, you might be able to read what they are without having to remove the paint off the drive.

Re: Outdrive serial number-where?

Thanks Don. That's where I was looking. It seemed like a logical location. There are no labels left on the drive and it's been repainted a few times. so I'm going to try some emery cloth to see if I can bring anything out. Where's CSI when you need them! Hy. P.S. I'm going to redo the compression and leak down tests tomorrow, hopefully, on that 5.0 engine I previously wrote about. It might be worth a couple of hundred just for all the accesories on it.
