Teleflex rack and pinion steering cable replacement

I have a 1988 Stratos with a 48 hp. Evinrude . The steering is very stiff. I would like any info on replacing the steeering cable . It has the Teleflex rack and pinion system with only one cable. How does it disconnect from the engine and the steering wheel ? Is this a job for the average mechanic or should it be taken to the dealer? Thanks

The cable is an easy fix. New cables are available right here on iboats. Go to the Marine store and go to steering.

1. The cable will simply "unwind" from the helm once the retaining bolt is removed. The retaining bolt is located where the cable enters the helm.

2. The engine cable will need to be removed also. Do that by unbolting the steering arm from the end of the cable. Then pull the cable out from the opposite side. You may have to unmount the engine for clearance.

Do #2 first. Before you condemn/order a cable, make sure your engine swivels freely.

Retain your old cable for reference (length).

disconnect the rod, make sure motor and cable are turning freely. the disconnect the nut on the cable going to the tilt tube.

Two other items:

Almost every steering cable made had the part number printed on the shield within a few feet of the end. Save the guess work and use that number;

And, attach a line to the end of your cable before you pull it out to assist in feeding in the new one.
