So, do you watch for deer intently? Read a book, sleep, think, etc?

I try to keep a keen eye, but when the deer dont come I try to pass time checking out the news on my web phone, or send a few text messages.

Think about all the people who have wronged me over the years and imagine them about 40 yards out with horns on their head. Not a big rack though just a spike :p

I usually tune in to the sounds and just kind of absorb in. I take my phone for emergency use but never have it on. One of my favorite things about hunting is getting away from all that stuff. After about an hour I could not care less about what's going on in the world and am totally relaxed (oh, and ready to kill things :D)...

If you're just looking for the easy 40 yarder, you can be distracted all day long. But the big ones never get that close and you never hear them. I wonder how many bucks you guys have missed?

I ussually just comune with nature LOL!
Once a chikadee landed on my broadhead and started peckin on the carbide tipped end of it!
Then he flew over and ate a berry off a poison ivy plant :eek:!!
I was expecting him to drop dead but he just flew away.
I assume he went to find an alley cat so he could kick it's butt! :p:p

Never had much time to wait and read or sleep when I sat in my tree stand around home. I'd get into that stand, settle in, watch the deer, pick the two or three out of the ten or twelve that were browsing and the rest is history.

In Maine it is not the same, you see a deer, you best shoot or you may not see another the rest of the week.

What ya all have for a tree stand? I have a "Tree Lounge" Bought the bow hunting series, it is an excellent climber stand.

I don't sit too much ... I am more of a "still hunter" and prefer the walk and stalk method (Guess I am just too ADHD). When we are driving for deer and I am stuck as the header, or watcher, I will usually pull out the pocket New Testament, read a verse and meditate will waiting for supper to come into range.

Well... I pay attention! I would not want to drive into a tree or a ditch  Make sure the windows are open too! Look for a possible warden and keep the guns and lights out of sight :D

Ohhh ohhh you mean in the woods!!!

I usually do nothing but watch..... call the hunting partners about every hour.

Re: What do you do to pass this time in the deer blind?

It's been a long time, but I'd sometimes nod off in the dark waiting on the sun to come up. Then I'd just sit there and shiver until 9:00 or so. Most of the time I didn't see anything.

There's a lot more deer around here now. When I was a teenager I think we were issued 3 deer tags. I believe they give you 8 now. I don't really care to eat it anymore so I never got back into it. Plus my friend that I used to go with all the time died right after he graduated from HS (non-hunting related).

If I catch a fish that I don't want to eat, (which is usually the case considering the cesspool I fish in) I can just let it go. With hunting, it's a lot more trouble passing the animal off to someone else.

Had some good times though. Rites of passage I guess.

Sit there and try to stop thinking about how cold my feet are.
I never sleep, or read. Too easy to miss something. The more I watch, the better I understand the enviroment there. The little details that come into play, after staring for about 2 hours, are sometimes quite important to know.
