175 exhaust cover gaskets

Got a question,The exhaust cover on the back of the engine has a slight water leak around a couple of the bolts. It just drips slow when the engine is running.
I looked at the BRP site and am going to order a new gasket,i noticed there is an inner gasket also and some kind of a square seal or gasket for the bottom of the housing.
Do i replace all 3? If so how much tear down is involved? I think the bottom seal or whatever it is is leaking too,i get exhaust stains on the mid section just below the cowling.
Thanks!

Re: 175 exhaust cover gaskets

your talking about the large bore 175 cross flow engine I assume, the gasket seal your talking about is kinds figure 8 open in middle if memory is correct, you should be able to get to it ,the inner exhust cover on that engine is a special material and costly, you may depending on yr have 2 orings for water passages along with the special gasket, then the outer cover gaskets,it could be a bear of a job if you have salt or corrosion issues, yes is the answer regarding all 3,once you loosen everthing up the inner ,expensive gasket will likely fall apart, the smaller bore ,like the 150 mentioned prior didnt have quite a complex situation because the exhust is different, that is why yours has a bubble back,if not fixed properly ,the leak will get worse and water into the cylinders is probable at some point

You are dead on Mike,The one i was talking about looks kind of like square figure 8.I think thats my exhaust leak from it or the inner cover gasket.
Looking on the BRP site for a 1981 175 its part #37.
I just wanted to make sure i can change it while the covers are off.I did notice my exhaust got a little louder near the end of the season too.
I hope replacing these will solve my leaks..

Ouch! 41 bucks just for that bottom seal!
The cover gaskets are about 11 bucks each.
Must be very "special" material on that one...

Re: 175 exhaust cover gaskets

This is not an easy job. The manual recommends that the bottom of the exhaust cover be flat (parallel) with the bottom of the block. If the block is still mounted, it is not easy to insure the reinstalled inner cover gets perfectly parallel. You want to be sure that the figure 8 gasket gets compressed well, or it can leak exhaust. You'll want to retorque everything after the engine heats up and cools the first time.

Re: 175 exhaust cover gaskets

Good info,Thanks.I would hate to remove the whole block to change that seal.
I wonder if this is better left to a shop to do?I'm a pretty good wrencher but did not want to get that involved just to change those gaskets.
Any advice from Dhadley or Ezeke??
