I bought a boat with an incomplete (carbs, cylinder heads are missing) Johnson V4 90HP 1981 outboard. THe tilt & trim is intack - it has a two wire (blue & green) motor, which I suspect is shot. Is one wire for +ve up & the other for +ve down and the -ve provided through the metal motor housing? I have applied +ve 12 volts to one wire then the other with -ve 12 volts to the motor body - should this turn the motor?

Thanks

Re: Johnson 1981 Tilt Motor wiring

The electric motor is a dual polarity motor, meaning that having voltage applied in one manner to both wires makes the motor run in one direstion. Switching (reversing) voltage to those two wires makes it run in the opposite direction.

Keeping it simple.....

Battery positive wire to green wire, battery negative wire to blue wire = one direction.... reversing those battery wires = other direction.

What is your model number, your setup will change slightly depending on the suffix at the end of your model number. Is it J90TLCIH or J90TLCIM? PM me with your email and I will mail you the wiring diagram, the file is too large to post on here, and is a pdf file.
